Help!
« on: May 25, 2013, 07:09:57 PM »
Hey guys, anyone live in or near Oban that can help me out? I am riding a K1100lt around Scotland and as I pulled into Oban this evening it just died on me.Battery has power, fuses are OK but there is no power to the bike. RAC have had a look but didn't really know what was wrong, so I am now stuck here until.either the local bike shop opens or I am recovered home to Salisbury. If there are any BMW ninjas out there who could help I would   be most grateful...

Is it cranking over just not starting or no lights or anything?

No nothing check the ground wire where it bolts to the transmission and check for corrosion on the terminals.

Now showing 12v at the battery and actually being able to spin over the motor are two different things. if you have a meter check the voltage when you hit the start button.

If its cranking Flip the kill swtich on and off and make sure you hear the pump prime.

If not then check the plug for the pump. Take the right side battery cover off and open the seat. should see a harness coming out from under the tank to a plug under the side cover.

Also push on the plug where it joins the ignition switch.

Reseat the main plug to the ECM over the battery.

Thats the simple stuff that often causes these sort of issues.

Past that the pump may have gone south.

Other than already said above, the sidestand switch often plays up. There is another connector behind the R/H sidepanel (two wires, one green & brown IIRC going into a flat looking connector) and if you add a link across the two pins it will short it and bypass the switch.

Well, progress but no repair yet. It looks as though it may be the side stand switch. Playing with the side stand got the bike to start but it then cut out again. Having taken the side and main stand off it looks as though this has been bypassed by a previous owner. The wire at the side stand was cut, and a wire beneath the seat, with the same colours has been soldered together. This, I think means a loose wire further up the harness, but it could take some time to identify. Does anyone know if stoddarts is open a bank holiday Monday, as I suspect my technical limit has been reached. The alternate is to recover home which will be gutting if it is just a loose wire...

Thats great that you tracked it down to that side stand switch harness. Lot cheaper then many things it could have been. The deeds of the PO are often the bane for many of us. Hopefully you can get sorted out today and you can be on your way.

Then playing with the sidestand should have done nothing :dunno2: Was the soldered connection insulated?

Turns out it was the ignition wire. I must have been jiggling it when I moved the sidestand. I have stripped down as much as I can, but cannot get the grubscrew out to take off the connector at the bottom...
