what is the lower left warning light indicating? 1994 K75
« on: April 30, 2013, 02:25:17 AM »
OK! 90 degrees in the Sacramento area today.  After a really fun (and warm) round of golf, I went for an evening ride around Lake Folsom - MAN the air smells wonderful at about 10 in the evening when I'm riding near water.  No deer out this evening although I was carefully watching out for them.
Here's the question; There are four warning lights on my 1994 K75.  Three of them are assigned to something important, Oil Pressure, Alternator and coolant Temperature.
The light on the lower left side isn't assigned to anything in the owners manual.  Er.........mine lit up with a yellow light this evening on my ride.  I cain't figger out what the hell that liddle lite is indicatin'...........
any ideas oh gurus of the flying brick?
thanks

Interesting. My '88 has a choke symbol by it, in addition to the other symbols mentioned.

hmmmmm
ok.  since the choke lever definitely wasn't on - sounds like some adjustment may need to be made to the choke lever/cable, etc.

On further research, do a sanity check and make sure it means that on your bike. Mine is earlier (1987) and I see the choke icon is gone on some pics of later clusters. So perhaps the meaning of the light there has changed.

Cooling, perhaps? I believe my coolant light only comes on when it's over-hot and the fan has failed to come on. Maybe you have an additional light just warning you that things are getting hot.

That's a good suggestion. I don't know the history of the evolution of the fuel injection on the K75, but I would guess that it updated at points during its run and the choke possibly became unnecessary, and the light was used for something else.

My yellow indicator is unlabeled.

It has not illuminated when I've ridden with the choke engaged.

The later K bikes do not have that light hooked up.  The wiring is there but there is no switch at the throttle butterfly rod end to trigger anything.  You can buy the switch for around $35 dollars if you want the light to work.  I guess BMW wanted to save some money and figured you could tell if your idle advance was on by looking at the lever.

... making the original question infinitely more interesting.

On my 1993 K75S the indicator is just yellow.  It looks like it might be lit up but is not.

funny indeed.  i may drop by the dealer and see if the "old" guy knows. It's yellow and it comes on really dim and then gets brighter.  came on towards the end of a one hour ride the other day.  first dim, and flickering and then on brighter and brighter.  then it came on yesterday when i started it and revved it slowly (on the center stand) and then went off and didn't come back on.
interesting mystery.
bike is running fine.  ( i think)   ; )

Didn't some of the early k-bikes have two fuel lights?

Notice that the lamp on the far bottom right wasn't marked either.
On the later ABS bikes both of those "unmarked" lamps are for the ABS system.

Are you sure? I thought the one at the lower right is a temperature warning light.

Yes, its the coolant over-temperature light.

The original K75 had a two-stage low fuel warning system.  At 7l remaining, the first lamp (6 in diagram) would come on.  At 4l remaining, the other lamp would come on (unmarked lamp).  Later the 4l lamp was deactivated. Apparently, it was later recycled into an ABS warning light. (Haven't paid attention to the latter, my 88 K75S is non-ABS.)

Don't think the K75 ever had the 2 stage warning light, it was a leftover from the 84-85 K100.  When they went to a single warning light the far left one was rewired for a zombie apocalypse warning feature.  If it lights up run like hell!

Too bad they never came up with a spline wear light.
