Idle and Battery issue

Better weather is here so it's time to start up my '86 k100 again. When the bike is fully warm, it reaches to its natural RPMs which are too high (appx 1300). There's no mechanical issue here, it's just that i have to adjust the idle. Unlike my other bikes and others that I owned, I don't know where the idle screw is. Somebody guide me here so I can reduce the RPMs down to a grand when it's warm.

The battery that was originally in the bike when I first picked it up was a much bigger battery than the battery plate was able to hold. The p.o. put a lawn and garden battery in there probably expecting more output from the size. It would actually sit on top of the plate as opposed to being placed inside of the four corners and those long battery screws barely had space to secure it in place. This battery died over the winter, so I now want to buy the correct battery that fits in its place. Does anybody know (or have a link) as to which battery to use or have a good cross reference?  I found a Scorpion battery YIX30L but am uncertain if that's the one. Thanks.

Odyssey 680 is probably your best battery option.

I use the three large brass mixture screws in conjunction with a CarbTune synchronizer to adjust my idle. You could try just turning each of those three screws to the right equally in tiny increments until your idle is correct, but syncing them is the best. Looks like Tim took the first step in making this a battery thread.  No one in my area had an Odyssey available, so I went with an AGM battery made by Bike Master #MS53030. Have been very happy with it. Don't skimp on your battery with a K bike, especially if you have ABS.

RE: idle screw.  It is at the end of the throttle cable between a couple of the throttle bodies.  (between one and two on a K75, not sure on a K100).  Bottom and left of where the throttle cable rotates and ends.

Note, if the TPS or "choke" cable is missadjusted the throttle screw won't even bottom out on it's stop.  See another thread about that a couple down here in the "Workshop".

I did research on some of the batteries listed in the Lieberry. All of them have varying dimensions different from the battery plate, which is 7 and 1/14" in length and 5" in width. I need a little education on batteries... Does a battery have to be specific to the bike, or can any motorcycle battery work? I ask because there are so many model numbers and sizes of batteries, but isn't any 12 volt battery with 220 cca sufficient? Especially for the K? I'm wondering if the different sizes are meant to accomodate battery plates/ compartments? To note, a recommended battery for the K like the Big Crank ETX-15L has smaller W and L measurements in comparison to the plate. So, I can only imagine it will shake all over the place each time I maneuver or hit bumps, even with the support bolts in place. Someone shed light on this so maybe I can to go to my local autozone and buy the closest motorcycle battery sitting on the shelf.

Regarding the idle, I'm not trying to synch the throttle bodies. I just want to find the idle screw that adjusts the idle/ RPMs. This is my only experience with a fuel injected bike, so would it be different than having an adjustment screw like those on carbed bikes?

The battery plate is shaped to accommodate two battery sizes; one large (OEM) size and the smaller width size (Odyssey). You'll want the height to be about the same as the OEM or Odyssey so that the clamp fits. I can't imagine you would have a problem with any other brand battery as long as the power specs are similar, but the quality of the battery might be different.

If your throttle (#2) and TPS (#6) are set correctly then adjusting the three brass throttle body mixture screws (#1) is what you need to do to dial in your desired idle RPM.

(Do not adjust #3 screws ever.)

i used a lawn tractor battery in one of my rs motobricks for a while... never let me down... was $40 at the lawn tractor joint...

Yeah, for the most part a battery is a battery.  In addition to one which fits the hole, you will probably want one with the positive on the west and the negative on the east (when your bike is facing north) so the cables will reach.

I removed the battery tray and went to autozone with it. I tried all their batteries and none would fit properly without needing the use of a shimmie by one of the support bolts. I decided to go back to the sears auto center and repurchase the same diehard gold UR1 lawn battery. It's bulky and barely fits between the supports, but for $54.99 and a one year replacement, it does the job. I'll just remember to short out the battery prior to the end of the replacement year. ;)

Regarding the idle, I was able to adjust the rpms by adjusting the idle adjustment screw (#1) an equal amount of turns. Without a carb synchronizer, would it make sense to bottom out each screw and then turn them all an equal amount of turns to obtain a synched idle?
