Waterpump Rebuild Time....

Well, after buying a "good" used water pump a few months ago to replace the leaking original, my baby is now leaking oil out of the weephole.  Guess I'll bite the bullet and try to rebuild it since over $400 for a new one is more than I paid for the bike, and our local shops don't rebuild....just replace.

Have found a couple of vids and pdf's going over the process but keep reading that without the BMW tool this is a hit or miss process. 
Have already ordered the seals and o rings and have 2 shafts and impellers to choose from, so hopefully it'll work out.

Any advice before I dive in?

Make sure that the shaft you use is clean with no grooving or tracking.

I too bought a used pump, but I'm gonna give it a shot of wd 40 first. before the install. My theory is the seals maybe a lil dry, and the spinning shaft will do more harm then good before it gets coated with the fluids ''naturally'' in the motor. It's just a theory.

Rocket, just put some motor oil in the oil channels and turn the pump by hand a little bit to coat things inside it. The water side will be wet before you start after you refill the cooling system so don't spray anything in it.

Sorry but he logic of buying a used 18-20 year old pump to replace a 18-20 year old pump and expecting it to be better escapes me. Age is as much of the problem as miles.

Mines weeping a VERY little bit. Seals are already on order. The Shaft is also an orderable part for $70 (I think) if I find mine to be corroded at the area the seals ride on.

when mine started weeping i rolled up a foam earplug and stuck it in there and held it till it fully expanded making a seal in the hole... hasnt weeped since...

 Yeah, I will. As for the buying of an old pump, It looked new, no corrosion.....I won't no for sure until arrival....should be today. But it cant be worse than mine,lol
 earplug in the weep hole; right, I can taste the sarcasm,lol. :euro

i aints ch1tt1ng you... the reason i used a earplug is because i couldnt get a tampon in there...

 speaking of tampons....I managed too get everything off the bike, waiting on the mail man. I think a allen wrench socket will help with the install....a couple of them bolts were pretty tedious with a regular allen wrench. I'm gonna need a tube of permatex,and some more brake cleaner.....right now it got way too hot too be workiing in the sunlight........my pump is in the basement waiting for some parts/cleaning. ( hopefully a winter project, ....where the hell is that damn donut eating mailman!

By the way, where does the smaller black o-ring go? I seen where the larger red one goes......but I aint got a clue where the smaller one goes.......is it slid onto the shaft??
