Help I messed up, placed engine oil in gearbox
« on: February 15, 2013, 08:56:14 PM »
Hello,

I am servicing 1992 K75RT, which I had in storage for the last 3 years.  The fuel pump & the rubber part of the holder were destroyed by the fuel, I change them and cleaned the tank.

I am changing all the liquids in the bike, and by mistake I poured the engine oil into the gear box.
Going to dump it, but do I need to flash it with something or could I just fill it with hyoid gear oil?

Also, I poured inside 4 qt of engine oil, I am surprised that I was able to pure so much in??

Thank
roni

There's no possible way that you got four quarts of anything oil in a transmission.

Post up a some pics of where you're putting these various oils.

If you did put motor oil in the transmission then just drain it really well with the bike on the center stand. It's not the end of the world.

That's the trans fill alright.  I can't believe you got four quarts in there.

Just drain the motor oil out, put the right amount of gear oil in there and don't worry about it.

Just a silly suggestion maybe -- you'll get a gallon in the gearbox easy if you don't check the level with the 'dipstick' and just keep on filling until it overflows...........

I bought a bike that had recently had the trans fluid replaced at Ventura BMW.  When I took the fill plug off to check I discovered that some idiot tech had filled it to the brim. :yow  I only had to siphon out about 12 oz. to get it back down to the correct level.  Add that to the .8l correct amount of oil and you don't get anywhere near a gallon.  That's why I didn't think four quarts will fit in there.

I happily bow to your experience with this - when I checked the level in mine it looked roomy enough.... I also may have overestimated the difference between UK and US gallons ever so slightly...

(I have a cold which is affecting my mental arithmetic - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :laugh )

If you're cheap, like me, you drained the oil into a clean container so you can put it in the engine after you get it out of the transmission.
