Roller Bobbins. Stainless Steel OR Stock...
« on: February 06, 2013, 07:26:06 PM »

I saw that there were stainless steel sets of the front brake disk Roller Bobbins for sale through a UK site.

Does anyone have the pros and cons for using these over the aluminium stock ones?

I am going to use the stock ones... I figure;

a. the designers knew what they were doing
b. the local BMW store has got them right now
c. the price is right for the new parts
d. the first set lasted 82K miles
e. I want to get out riding...

I am still interested in the opinions...

+1,

The aluminum ones were designed/intended to be the "wear point" of the floating rotor system. Easy, inexpensive to replace.

If you go with the steel ones what will happen is that now both the rotor carriers and the bobbins will share the "wear". You may get some more longevity but when it comes time to replace again you will most likely be replacing "both" the bobbins and the rotors/carriers. Much more $ then.

At 82K, the rotors will most likely be thinner than their wear limit before wearing out bobbin holes is an issue.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

I've just fitted the stainless bobbins into discs that have done about 27k (according to the old receipts I have with the bike).  One side was OK, but the other was a very tight fit and it may take a while before it 'floats' as it's supposed to.  I don't think I could have done this without removing the discs, due to the tightness of the bobbins and the awkwardness of fitting the circlips on top of the wavy washers supplied.  I had to put the circlips part way on, then 'tap' them the rest of the way with a socket.  One or two of the circlips don't seem to have seated concentrically and will be replaced.

So maybe an original set of bobbins would be easier to fit.

In line with what Frank says, I expect the discs to wear out before the bobbin holes do.  I doubt if I'll still have the bike by then anyway.  Ebay is my friend and my enemy  :laugh.
