« on: January 23, 2013, 06:47:24 AM »
could  somebody tell me whether a bmw car model 318 filter fits a K100. i ve looked on the site for this info but cannot find same . the filter ive sourced locally is slightly longer about10mm. than the sample from  K100. also what is the diameter of the aperture into which the oil filter fits in the sump. thanks.

I have heard of using the oil filter from a 318i. These are listed over in the Lieberry > Alternate parts

•   AMSOIL: ASF-57
•   AC DELCO: PF-53
•   FRAM: PH-3614, PH6063
•   Hastings: 157A, LF157
•   Motorcraft: FL-271, FL-793
•   Purolator: FCO-201, PER-241
•   Wix: 51348, 51785

I've been using the AC Delco ever since the newness wore off about 25 years ago.  So far so good.

If you want to use the filter from the car to save yourself a little cash, don't bother. It took me a while to find the stock number for the auto filter but it was a waste of my time. When I called the dealership, they quoted a price that was almost 50% more than the regular stock one from the bike dealer.

If it is a matter of logistics, your BMW auto dealership can order parts for your bike if you can give them the part numbers, or so I have been told.

Here is some others that should work for you:

Mahle OC-91 (BMW's stock filter under a different name)

BOSCH Part # 72161 - seems to be the standard for aftermarket oil filters for the K bike.

BOSCH Part # 3330

BOSCH Part # D3330 - "Distance" filter - same size but weighs more than regular #3330, more filtering media, should be great with synth oils.

MOTORCRAFT Part # FL910S

FYI- The Bosch 72161, 3330, and D3330 all fit the 2003 Ford Focus with the 2.3L engine. The 3330 and D3330 are super easy to find.

Also, the Bosch 72161 uses the same filter wrench as the Malhe and BMW. I can't speak about the 3330 series.

thanks for your replies. Iread somewhere that the only cheap thing about a bmw is the owner. Please remember this is Africa. We dont have the resources that you folk in the US or Europe have. The agents are notoriously expensive. its all a matter of convenience . Our currency is about 8.5 to 1 US $. So multiply $ by 8.5 and add on dealer profit. To give you a yardstick i paid about $ 2350 for my K100RS in excellent shape 56k kms. not too shabby i reckon. cheers

Sorry, did not know you are in Africa. Many of the filters we have listed are available through rockauto.com. They have a very good price on the Bosch 72161.

FWIW, I paid more for my 1995 K75 standard with over 50k miles than you paid for your K100.

yes im in Capetown. just a few miles from CAPE Winelands. dont want to labour the point but the local stealership sells oil filter for R260 whereas similar GUD filter is R65 but as i said in my previous post its about 10 mm longer. let me add that i bought my bike  from the pic on gumtree. at that price i was nt going to dilly dally. notasmart move but the seller was a retired submarine captain. I REST MY CASE

I don't know what it would cost to get it to you, but right now the Bosch 72161 filter goes for less than 3 US dollars when purchased from

rockauto.com.
