K- 4 Vavle head on a MiniCooper Motor??
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:29:55 PM »
:loopy:  Has anyone ever heard of people somehow putting a K1100 head on the tiny MiniCooper engine?
I was told racers do it and get big HP gains.  Is this for real?  It seems like it would be a HUGE job to make all that stuff work.   Just curious.................       :bmwsmile

I don't claim to be an expert on it but it's my understanding that on the old MCs the cylinder head exhaust ports are Y'd together somehow and putting a K 4V head on frees up the exhaust flow.  To a large extent the head "bolts right up" but you're right that there's a fair amount of mod work involved for the timing, exhaust, etc....

Though not a common mod it's not that uncommon either.

Google on it and you'll find a fair amount of info on the topic.

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Remember, this is the original 998cc mini, not the new BMW-minis.  It was an archaic 2v pushrod engine with the intake and exhaust on the backside.  The K1 head pretty much bolts on, and the cylinder bores line up.  Updating it with a crossflow, DOHC 4V head makes a big difference :yow

Wow, looking at the 2 photos sure tells the story!  Those little motors must really scream!  Thanks.

There was a time when people were buying(and maybe still are to some extent) used K motors for just the head.

Motorworks in the UK offer two kits for the Mini, one with the 8v head and the other with the 16v head.
