K75S Flaky Speedometer
« on: December 25, 2012, 12:13:16 PM »
When I bought my '88 K75S, the PO said that the speedometer had not been working. However, he had cleaned the sensor at the final drive, and now it was working okay.

Every now and then, I will look down and the speedometer needle is at 0 and mileage is not being recorded. Then all at once while I'm going straight and level down the road (no sudden bumps or jolts) the needle will start to rise, and it all works again. This seems to be completely at random, and maybe happens once out of every hour or more of riding, and seems to last for one or two miles.

I had thought about replacing the sensor and the wire, but I can't find it on fiche.

What do you guys think?

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Fix a flaky or inoperative K bike speedometer

Well, I guess it is good to know that I don't have to buy parts.

The kicker is that the trip meter/odometer died at my first fill up after buying the bike last September. I have already pulled all the fairing, etc. off to get the instrument cluster off and send it for repairs. I am not going back in there anytime soon.

I will follow your procedure sometime, maybe in the spring.

Thanks for the info Duck, and the question from detbmw.  My speedo, went south shortly after doing a spline lube job.  I have tried cleaning the sensor a few times but it still does not work.  I'll pull the cluster next and let you know how that worked.

I just got around to taking the instrument cluster out.  The three prong connector looked good, I did not see any corosion.  I have been putting dielecrtic grease on connections as I take the apart on the bike and did the same here.  The speedomete is still not workning :dunno

This happened shortly after pulling the final drive off so I can't help but to think this may have caused the problem since I did disconnect the cable from the sensor on the FD.

On the plus side this does not keep me from riding  :mm

I have been putting dielecrtic grease on connections

I put dielectric grease on the prongs on the back of my speedo -- mistake, I think. The female part of that connection (the plugs inside the two big carriers that go into the back of the speedo) are pretty delicate copper and I think the grease spreads them apart and hinders the connection. One project for the winter is cleaning all that out, with contact cleaner spray or something that will cut the grease.

I guess the more often I take the fairing off the better I will get at doing it.  Pain in the ass none the less.

First time poster - long time lurker reporting in!

I have this problem (or similar) on my 86 K75s. I'm quite enjoying the fine art of learning about 'known issues' - or as frankenduck would say 'they all do that' - over the last couple of months i've had this machine.

My Speedometer will work above 80kmh all the time, it's the low speed stuff where i'll look down to make sure i'm ~50kmh and the needle will be flat, and the trip meter / odometer will not increment.

To be honest that's my biggest concern, as the thing has already down 150,000k and apparantly the speedo has been playing up for a weewhile, so who knows how many 'true' K's this thing has done!

Will check the connections out as posted in http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,449.0.html and get back to ya :)
