« on: December 19, 2012, 09:04:21 AM »
Ive got an 87 k100. The starter seems to be going bad. It spins up but wont engage.
Im a teacher and cant fork out $450 to maxbmw for a starter. Ouch!!

So what you guys got out there?  Or can i just replace the solenoid?  Other ideas?

No solenoids on K bikes.  They employ a sprag that catches to turn the engine.  Yours is probably gunked up.

Sounds like a sprag issue, as duck said. If it is something wrong with the starter itself (unlikely based on your symptoms) i have one i can sell.

+1.  The sprag clutch is gunked up.  Add CD-2 to the oil - get someone to push start the bike - run 100 miles and that almost always clears up the problem.  Drain the old oil and replace with fresh stuff.

$5.00 solution.
