Hurricane Storage
« on: October 26, 2012, 01:18:30 PM »
So apparently the remnants of hurricane Sandy are going to hit my area this weekend and obviously my first concern is the bike. I don't have any sort of covered garage or car port that I can put it in and I don't want it getting knocked over by a wind gust. I'm probably going to move it around behind my place to the patio so it should get some protection.

Does anybody have any other ideas for stabilizing/protecting it?

Take it to a store/mall/hospital that has indoor parking and leave it there for the weekend?

I'd avoid underground parking for obvious reasons.

Rent a Storage Room for a month and store it there untill the blow is over. Just make sure it is inland and on high ground.
You can put your outdoor stuff there also to keep them safe and out of someone elses living room.

And buy the cheap renter's insurance while you're at it.  :deal:

Probably won't be very cheap when the agents and underwriters know a hurricane is coming.........

Reminds me of a funny story:

Several years ago I bought some parts on Fleabay from a seller down south.  One of the parts I bought was a dash pad with the switches in it.  When it arrived and I took the switches apart I discovered that all of the dash switches were 100% PACKED full of silt.  It was very obvious that the K75 he was parting was a Katrina victim that had spent a LONG TIME fully submerged.  The guy had probably picked the bike up on the cheap, pressure washed everything and listed all of the salvageable parts on Fleabay.  Not a big deal to me as I was able to clean out the switches to make them usable again but boy did the seller get PISSED when I posted three times in his feedback that he was scam artist parting out a Katrina bike. :laugh

Thanks for the advice everyone, I wish I had the time to take a trip out west.
The storm has tracked more northward so the forecast for my area is a little better. Heavy rains and gusts around 45.
I've got the bike hunkered down on the patio/alcove behind my house it should be alright back there.

Duck, I guess that's just more evidence that bricks don't float. In '08 I was looking for my first car and by then a bunch of the cars had migrated north to the lower end dealers. It was the same sort of thing. They'd cleaned them up real well on the outside even most of the rust on the undercarriage and gotten them running again. But as soon as the salesman wasn't looking I'd peel back some of the carpet or open up a tail light and there would be dirt or corrosion.
