i've got the branded bags that just have the plastic slide on bottom hinge, had one snap and pull off the strap as well, do parts exist for such things or is it time for MacGyver to visit the hardware store and make something ugly and less waterproof?

it looks like its sort of designed to fail eventually, just thin plastic that bends easily when you open and close, not sure about the strap though, it looks like a snap on the inside wall but the strap just has a grommet on it, I see a lot of these kind of bags out there just wondering if its too obscure of a part to be replaced (imagining the dealer just saying why not just drop a grand on new bags)

I'm leanin towards the latter, i need to leverage against that hinge to compress my cargo daily to get it to close, dont know how well plastic hinges are going to take that

I've got one hinge on each case that's broke and I've been wondering how to repair them.
I'm leaning toward metal hinges like Chaos only a little bigger.

 The plastic hinges are cheap. I changed mine, easy to do, when I got the bike in 08.
I carry an extra pair. I'v been overstuffing my saddle bags for 4 1/2 years now.
It's my daily get to work with some mid distance runaround stuff thrown in.
Lap top and paper work in a back pack on one side, rain suit, MC cover and chit in the other.
 They are still good, but, I do like the stainless piano hinge mod.

Awhile back I picked up some used Gen III bags. I've been busy and I have been picking away at this refurbish bag project of mine for some time. I have been following the very nice write up on refurbishing bags, of Frankenduck's, found in the Lieberry section. It has proven to be such a nice guide for me. I was just thinking about where to go to pick up the plastic hinges for the bags ... your question and the timing is perfect. Thanks. Agreed that the plastic works well enough.  BTW, I have them go on me while out touring.  As usual, duct tape will get you home until you can replace them with new ones.

Although the stainless piano is what I'd do if I ever wanted to replace the plastic ones.

The McMaster-Carr catalog also show a plastic piano hinge.  The BMW part that is the rough equivalent is actually cheaper!  Never thought I'd see that in this life....   :loopy:

decided to go cheap but to leave the old hinges in place, more to screw too more protection against the elements, we shall see how it holds up just glad to have my bag back
