Trying ... but not succeeding ... to install the drive shaft

I'm putting the K1100 back together. The swingarm is the next to go on and I'm trying to install the shaft first. When I pulled the bike apart neither the trans output shaft nor the final drive had a snap ring installed. I bought the two new snap rings - one is thicker than the other. It appears to me that the thinner one installs on the output shaft and the thicker on the FD input. Is this correct?

I've installed the thinner ring on the output shaft and tried several times to install the shaft with the hammer/block of wood but no dice. I don't want to hit it so hard that I damage something.

Any ideas? This bike has been apart a month now and I'm getting really frustrated.

I'm surprised that it didn't have snap rings.

I don't know which one goes where but if you kept them in the bags with part numbers and know which is which then the 26111451977 goes in front and the 26112310656 goes in the rear.

In a perfect world, yes. But they got separated.

If you're near a dealer then call them and ask them if they have either of them in stock.  Then go there and ask them if you can look at one of them to sort things out.  Or just buy another 977 since it's <$1.

Thanks Duck. The front portion of the DS went on after some alignment. It's the thinner of the snap rings btw.

Having a bike apart for a month is an adventure when you're putting it back together. Did I take pics beforehand? NOOO...

Bonus question - does the battery ground attach at the front bottom of the battery carrier? There's a nut/bolt in that hole and it looks logical.

Probably too late now but did you install the front portion before or after installing the swing arm?  It's easier to do it before you install the swing arm.
