K100LT Oil Filter Suggestions?
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:57:51 AM »
Morning gang...

Looking at changing out the oil on the K100 and I'm looking at filters.
I see on FleaBay an K&N Powersports KN-163. Has anyone used this brand?
Any suggestions on a different brand or alt. filter?
I saw in the updated service manual that a Bosch 72161 is suggested but I have not found one local to me.
Any suggestions or hints?

Thanks
Opus!

Bosch 3030.

Or just order some 72161s from RockAuto:

http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,catalog,23,partnum,72161,d,BOSCH_72161.html

Buy several of them and you'll be set for a while.

If you have a WalMart near by, you can get the Bosch 72161 through them. Auto zone has them as well.
You will pay more than through Rock Auto, but much less that a filter from a dealer.

Thanks Guys....
I tried Walmart, Autozone, O'Reilly's, and Advanced Autoparts all did not carry that filter. I was told that Bosch was not making them any more.
I called my Local BMW Motorcycle Dealer and he had the BMW filters in stock so I got one there. Will order some from Rock Auto for future use.
The BMW Filter came in a kit so it had everything I needed and he knocked of 10% for me. (SWEET)
I picked up some 20w-50 and some Moble One 75w-90 gear oil and plugs so I can do an oil change and replace the plugs.

It's going to be raining here for the next few days so I have time to do it.

Thanks again!!!!!!!

FYI, Wix makes an oil filter that will cross reference to the Bosch 72161.

Try Wix #51348. Found this on the Wix website this morning.

Also, I know that an oil filter for a BMW 318i or a 320 will fit a K bike.

I just do not know what model years. Maybe someone has that information to share?

Hey Duck, do the filters from RockAuto come as a kit or just the filters?

Ones I bought from rock auto were just the filters. The boneyard has kits with crush washers and o rings.

It's a generic filter, not one made for Ks so, no, it's just the filter.  FWIW, I only bother to replace the O-ring every other change.

The FRAM for Ks ends in 6063.  They're crap.  Don't use them. :nono

I've been using the AC Delco PF53 ever since the newness wore off my K75   (1990?)  The bike seems happy enough.  I figure the engine is basically car-like, so if the filter is good enough for a car...........

I was running around today and dropped by Auto Zone, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and Wal Mart. This is what I found in the stores that would fit:

Auto Zone- Autolite #AL3614, Bosch #3330, Mobil # M1-102, and STP #S 3614

O'Reilly- AC Delco #PF53, Bosch #3330, K&N #HP1002, Mobil # M1-102, and Wix #51348

Wal Mart- Bosch #D3330, Motorcraft #Fl-910S, and Purolator #L10241

Prices range from less that $3 for the Autolite to $14 for the K&N. The Bosch D3330 is about $12 and the plain 3330 goes for about seven bucks.
All three stores also had 3 to 4 versions of the Fram junk. It appears that the Fram 6063 and 3614 series will both fit the Ks.

Not one retailer had reference information on oil filters for the Ks. All of this was cross referenced from the Bosch 72161 number. I would like to know what the differences are between a Bosch 3330 and a 72161.

Next week I will drop by Napa Auto Parts and see what they carry.

I don't know if it's still the case but the Fram X-ref book used to list the 6063s for a K75.

Interestingly, it is listed on Amazon, and without the dreaded Fram grippy stuff, or even any paint!

I am finding not much of anyone that likes the Fram filters for use on a flying brick. I would like to find out why. Considering that you can purchase a
Bosch filter for 3 to 7 bucks, why spend 9 dollars on a questionable product like the 6063?

Do not know why on the Bricks, but on my GL1100/GW I did not get the mileage that I got using a Honda Filter.
I would change my oil every 3 months no matter the mileage and the oil was always cleaner with the Honda Filters.
The Fram filters did not clean the oil as well and tended to look collapsed when I did a change so I switched back to Honda.
I found that some filters work better on some cars/bikes than others. What works well on a Honda CD550 may not work as well on a GL1100.

I used Fram filters in a Ford Toronio Sport (351-C) and it worked well on it, but when I used it in my 89 S-15 Jimmy it did not work as well as a AC Delco did.
I use the STP filters for now as they seem to work better on our 99 Explorer than others I have tried. (Over 100k)

I got the BMW Dealer Filter this time as I really needed to change the oil but wanted to know what the group thought and used on their bikes.
I will be trying the suggested filters to see what works well on the K100 I got and run with it. I will update my findings as I do.

I do not know if I would suggest all of the filters that I posted. It was more for a reference guide that anything else. If the Fram filters are junk, then I might shy away from anything that uses a "3614" number to avoid the chance that Fram makes those for another company.

As I did my "fact finding" run yesterday, I tried to look up filter information on the K bike with zero results. I was told by one employee that they only use reference data given them by the filter manufacturer. Not one retailer had direct information for a K bike filter, but the Bosch 72161 filter seems to be an unofficial K bike standard, so I had a place to start. My goal with all of this was to find a filter that I could purchase locally through a known group of retailers.

I did take the time to look each filter to compare it with the Bosch standard and to see if it has the rough "grip" finish featured on Fram filters.
Every filter seemed to have a weight equal to or less than the Bosch 3330 with one exception. Bosch D3330. The D3330 seemed to be the heaviest filter that I found. Assuming the added weight is more filtering capability, then that is the one to buy. Might be a good choice if you are running synthetic oil. No company except Fram sports the added black paint that I could find.

In the past, I have come across reference info that claims the Bosch filters are made by Purolater or Wix, I don't remember which one. The Wix filters are priced about the same as the Bosch and the Purolator brand retails at half that. I have never heard anything bad about Wix and it was slightly less than the Bosch in cost. Wix is what I ended up buying for my "just in case I need it and all the stores are closed" supplies.

Hi everyone,

Just one last bit of oil filter reference data for ya. Today I stopped by a Napa Auto Parts store and a local mom and pop auto parts house.
I ask about an oil filter for a K75 and came up with a big fat zero each time. Both places had listings for a K100 and K1.

Napa "Gold" series- PS7936
Wix 57936

FYI: I was helping a local guy and the one he got one from Napa but it needed a different sized filter wrench.  I gave him a 72161 and told him to take it back.

The only problem I have using the OEM B wrench is that when I try to seat it on the filter with and extention, it pushies the extention out of the wrench and the wrench sticks to the filter.
I have this problem with the one I use on the Explorer too. I have a friend with a welder and I was thinking about having him weld a nut to the base so I can use a socket to remove and tighten the filter in place. I could also use a bolt to remove the wrench if it gets stuck.
Will update when/"IF" I give it a try.

Lynn. Yes a PDF would be a great thing to have for ref. Let me know if you need or want some help.
