Temp gauge:

Install sensor to replace drain plug.  Run wire from temp sensor to black wire for temp gauge.

Tap gray/blue wire into any other gray/blue wire under the tank.

Tap green/black wire into any other green/black wire under tank.

Ground the brown wire.

Fuel gauge: I think you're hosed there.  If you switch tanks/fuel level senders then a post 85 tank won't mount up to an 85 frame.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

I have done it (84 bike), no worries. As above; fit the sensor in the drain plug hole of the cooling water pump and run a wire up. You can use the BMW wire/sensor set if you feel rich and run the wire under the tank. In the loom of the early K's there's a 3-lead plug for 'additional instruments' (yes, indeed!), where you can take your power/ground and light signal from. Run a piece of loom from there to the intended location for the gauges and you're done. I have fitted mine (Cooling water temp and Volt) in the left compartment of the fairing.

Cheers, Rene

The wires is routed behind the water pump cover and the hall sensor cover.
Remove the hall sensor cover (T-shaped), run a stiff wire behind the w.p. cover
use this wire to drag the sensor wire through.
