Battery tender recommendation
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:08:19 AM »
To prolong battery life and make sure your K bike is ready to ride when you want to ride it, it is a good idea to keep it on a battery charger when the bike is not in use, especially if you live in a snowy climate where the bike may sit for months.

Deltran makes an extensive line of 12V battery tenders. The most basic model is the Battery Tender Junior. I have several of these and my oldest one is still working great after eight years of constant use. They're usually priced in the $20-$25 range if you shop around.

Using the Powerlet socket to battery tend: Since the Powerlet socket on K bikes is non-switched it can also be used with a battery tender.  The best price I've found for Powerlet-compatible plugs is by searching Fleabay for "Hella plug."

If anyone else wants to share their opinions on battery tenders then feel free to add to this thread.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

The Deltran Battery Tender Junior model is now made in China and has quality control problems. I wanted a second one, but after reading reviews about how the quality has gone down, I bought a Yuasa Smart Shot 900 instead. Better reviews. It is a fraction larger than the Deltran (maybe 1/4 inch or less). I paid 19.95 for mine. Both models are priced about the same.

Quality problems in China? Say it isn't so.

Bummer about the BTJ.  I really like mine.

Thanks for the update.

I like mine too. I wanted a second tender so that I could keep one with the bike and one at home. I would have bought a second BTJ if the reviews had been better. With the Yuasa I can tell them apart :)
