Tight drain plug?
« on: June 06, 2012, 06:57:44 PM »
Well I just picked up my bike from the shop and drove it home in a wicked thunder storm.  I was planning on draining the oil as soon as I got home but
the plug is tight, possibly seized.  I assume it has a standard counter clockwise to open thread.  Any ideas?  Should I let the engine cool a bit first?  I don't
want to push too hard and strip the allen key hole.

Standard threads - righty tighty/lefty loosy.

If you're really worried about it then don't use it.  You can drain the oil by removing the oil filter cover - which you have to do anyhow to change the filter.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Standard right hand thread; try an impact driver or impact wrench rather than leaning on the plug.

Normally drain the oil when hot, but use precautions so you don't burn yourself with the hot oil.

What duck said. just loosen the 3 bolts until some oil starts to ooze out and then do 2 of em a little more til you got a little waterfall.

Well I was a bit worried, don't have an impact wrench.  I just took a small hammer and tapped the allen key a few times lightly and it gave in.  One important feature to know is that the oil filter cover only fits one way - with the grooves in-line with the bike.  It took me a couple of minutes to figure that out.
