Power outlet in the storage compartment

I'm planning to add a cigarette lighter type power outlet (because I think it'd be convenient to have one "standard" 12V outet available, and I'll fit it with a USB charger for all the gadgets) in the rear "storage compartment" of my K75. Current plan is to hook it up to the battery via a fuse and a relay (controlled by the rear light) fitted onto the rear light unit where I think there's just enough space for a relay.

Just wanted to run this by the crowd and ask if there's some better options I've overlooked?

 :dunno2: I mounted one up front, on the inner fairing, out in the open, so I could access it to keep a cell phone charged.

Better off mounting a SAE outlet in your tank bag or or "up front" dash space. I went with a Mototech outlet with a weatherproof cap on my whip.

I mounted mine in the storage compartment. out of the elements . I use it for charging my cell phone and GPS power.

I made an "adapter" with a cigarette lighter receptacle and an extra BMW plug.  It works and is rarely needed.

I'm thinking about doing this on my '87 K100RS.   For anyone who's done this before, what size inline fuse did you use?

I made a Powerlet to Cigarette lighter adapter, which I ran into my tank bag through the safety strap and a small hole in the side of the bag. Works pretty well.

I've done exactly this and it works just fine.

I don't have a Powerlet on my '87 K100RS, but I want to add accessory outlet.    in some of the posts, people noted they used an off the shelf cigarette lighter style socket, wired in with an inline fuse.   What size fuse would you use?

Depends on what & how many devices you are going to power from it.
If you are just going to charge a phone, and it takes 12v @ 2 amps a 3 amp fuse would work.
But if you are going to power a phone & GPS unit @ 2 amps each you would need to have a 5 amp fuse to do both at the same time.
You will want the fuse to be just above the total amps needed.

Old thread but here is what I have done

I've added one cig plug up under the fairing for my gps. It's just a loose socket zip tied up out of the way. Have to know where it is and feel for it. I have a LT so I just grabbed the wires for the cig lighter (missing on mine) in the left glovebox. Places like cycle gear and such usually have a cig plug with a clamp. I'm planning on picking one up because on my LT it looked like enough room to attach it to the fairing support frame.

To keep the extra wiring in check I have a Velcro wire tie to the support frame. 

I have a hella power port to cig plug adaptor I got from motorcycle superstore that I thread into the tank bag when needed.

If you have a LT with a stereo kit there is already a power pig tail into the trunk. It's there to an optional mirror with a vanity/trunk light. It plug into the harness powering the stereo in the left glove box. I put a cig plug to it for changing the phone or tablet. 

Places like west marine sell a USB set up if your would rather have that but I find a cig plug and a USB adaptor gives more options.
