ABS Ring - Disc Carrier removal?
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:44:54 AM »
While removing the rear disc on a 95 K75RT(w/ABS), I encountered the same situtaion Duck described on  http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,658.0.html  One easy bolt, one balky bolt.  Needed to be drilled off.  Although I did not see this posting until afterwards (gotta do more searches ahead of time).
I am contemplating a new rear disc, but I am unsure of the procedure to transfer the carrier and ABS ring to the new disc  Nothing in Clymers. An article in IBMWR.org refers to grinding off the rivets but it seems to me I need to remove the ABS ring from the carrier to get access to the rivet holes for reassemble of the new disc. The 3 little bolts holding the ABS ring seem to only function as some kind of safety setting.  Is it a heat/shrink fit process?  Or do I leave the ABS ring attached to the carrier and use screws with the new disc?  Am I missing something here?
Why am I replacing it?  Thickness is down to .154, so I still have a ways to go.  But it's off the bike right now and the surface has a few imperfections.  Maybe the hassle of the carrier removal is not worth it right now.

The min spec on that rotor is 0.14.  If you've got 0.154 on it then there TONS of miles left on that rotor and I wouldn't bother changing it.

Also, the ABS ring is part of the rotor and if you get a replacement rotor then it should come with an ABS ring.

Just to update this... I just bought a new rear rotor from EBC that arrived a few minutes ago. Definitely doesn't come with an ABS ring on it. So, I popped on here; found this thread; started sweating; gathered myself, a hammer with claw, and a shop rag. As carefully as I could, I pried off the ring. I haven't yet installed it onto the new rotor, but I wanted to update this to reflect that it does occur and it can be dealt with.

The ABS ring will go on much easer if you warm it in the oven and throw the disc in the freezer.

Mine slipped on just fine. Almost worryingly easily.
