K75 ABS - Should front and rear wheels operate the same way?
« on: April 19, 2012, 08:03:28 AM »
Yep, this is a cross post from the K-bike yahoo list... sorry but no responses there ;-)

I changed my brake fluid and did some other maintenance with battery out.  Upon starting the bike (K75RT, 1993) I had ABS fault lights that stayed on as I rode off.  Tried locking up the rear brake and it did, indeed lock up.  Back to the garage and did an ABS reset.  On the road again, lights went out and tried locking up the rear again.  This time, I got a "clunk, clunk" ABS action... maybe two cycles per second or less.   I'd never actually tried the rear wheel ABS before and was surprised at how clunky it was.   In my garage, with very smooth floor, I get the bike moving a bit and try to lock up the front wheel and the ABS kicks in right away with a much higher frequency cycle rate... more a buzz than a clunk, similar to what my car ABS does.   On the garage floor, rear wheel just locks up and skids with no ABS action.  So, front and rear wheel ABS operation is VERY different.   Now, I'm wondering if I have a problem?  Rear wheel action just doesn't seem right to me as it seems it should work the same as the front.  If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be most appreciated!

Thanks and have a great day!

Congrats, most "chicKen shit bricKheads" NEVER even test the front brake ABS action in real time.

YES with ABS version 1, the rear tends to have more of a rodeo effect than the front.  Less weight is my theory.

NO sweat, go OUT and ride.

Thanks, Gary!   Yeah, I haven't stopped riding it, was just curious as I hadn't ever tried the rear ABS so had no baseline for how it worked.  Guess I haven't needed it on the road yet (and hope I won't either).

Have a great day!
