Post your thoughts on various seat options here
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:16:41 PM »
Here's mine:

BMW K75, K100 and K1100 "square" stock seats are simply awful.  I did two long days on one on a K1100RS fly-n-ride purchase.  By half way through the second day I had to stop every hour due to the ass pain.  There is a special place in hell for whoever came up with that seat design.  My butt hurts just looking at one of these.   Zero motobirds.

The stock seat that came on a BMW K1 that I bought last year was similarly uncomfortable but an Alaska Sheepskin butt pad makes it a bit more tolerable. One motobird for this one. :mbird

The scooped out rounder BMW "comfort" seats are pretty decent but built for someone with a shorter inseam than my 34".  Three motobirds for this one.  :mbird :mbird :mbird

My worst seat experience ever was Rich's Custom Seats in Seattle. (Now Kingston.)  He took a K bike stock seat and actually made it worse - which is quite a feat if you ask me.  I then went back for a second whole day of waiting around to try to get it better.  I told him it needed it be lower, more scooped out and farther back.  He did pretty much the opposite (I think because he was too cheap to make another cover for it which is what he would've had to do to move it back as I requested.)  It is nice looking though but it is the very definition of a polished turd.  After wasting $500+ (I think it's $700 now) and two whole days I just gave up.  I've run into a lot of people who are VERY satisfied with his work and power to them but I've also run into a lot of people who had experiences similar to mine.  Given my experience, the price and the result apparently being a crap shoot I would never recommend him to anyone.  Rich gets negative motobirds for all the time and money I wasted.

I've had several Sargeant seats of varying styles.  All worked pretty well. There were all in the three to four motobird range. :mbird :mbird :mbird :mbird

Corbin:

Dual Tour: A pretty decent seat that I've put many miles on but made for someone with a shorter inseam than me. Four motobirds. :mbird :mbird :mbird :mbird

Dual Canyon Sport:  OK seat.  Better looking on an S or RS K bike.  I run one now on my K1100RS - use an Alaska butt pad for longer rides. Three motobirds. Maybe three and a half.  :mbird :mbird :mbird

Gunfighter: Looks good because the back of it matches the K bike tail cowl but way too hard for serious miles. Two motobirds.  :mbird :mbird

Rumble seat: (The back part flips up to be a passenger backrest.) About the same as the Gunfighter. Two motobirds.  :mbird :mbird

All of the Corbin seats I've had have been very heavy due to the fiberglass seat pan.

Russell Day Long:  I've had several used ones.  Most have been pretty good but were built for people with a shorter inseam.  The most recent used one I got is an inch or two back compared to the others and is bar none the most comfortable seat I've ever ridden on.  There is only one minor nit I have with RDL seats.  When you're stopped at a light and standing you can feel the "wings" hit the back of your thighs.  It's just a very minor thing but enough to bug me just a little.  If I ever did an Iron Butt Rally it would be on a RDL.  I've put several 14 hour days on that seat and its comfy even for that.  This seat is the king with five motobirds. :mbird :mbird :mbird :mbird :mbird

Rick Mayer:Johnny has several and gives them rave reviews so I had one made last year when he was having a sale.  The seat I got back from him was too high, too far forward and pitches my torso forward on a bike that's supposed to be ridden upright. (K1100LT)  It would probably work well on my K1100RS but I wanted it for my LT (and that's what I sent him pictures of me sitting on) so it's just sitting in my basement.  To be fair to Rick I have not had a chance to contact him about getting it better dialed in (plan to finally get around to that next month) so my jury is still out on Rick Mayer.  Motobird rating still pending....
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

The Corbin Dual Tour is much better on an RS than an RT.  IMO.

Gotta love those Day-Longs!

Oh, almost forgot.  When I rode that K75S from WI to Was last summer I put a like new Rick Mayer that I'd scored on FleaBay for cheap on it.  That worked fairly well and gets four motobirds.  I think the Mayer seat design may be more effective for a leaned forward position.  :mbird :mbird :mbird :mbird

I bought a second hand Corbin Rumble a few weeks ago. It's a great saddle (very firm but not too firm in my opinion - my ass has enough cushion already) except it is a noticeably shorter than my previous Corbin Dual Tour. I have a 34" inseam and it is too short for me. It would probably work great for someone under 6' (I'm just over that) or with shorter legs.

On that note, is there anyone who is riding a seat that is "too tall" for them and interested in a trade? I will post a separate thread too...

Not a bad idea... thanks! I found these two companies when looking for pads, in case anyone is interested:

I've been pretty satisfied with my Corbin dual tour. 600 mile day (all day ride. Lots of twisties, hwy 1 etc) was still feeling great. Could do with a bit more foam in the nose section, to put more weight on the wide back part.

I am kinda curious to modify a stock seat. Could be made so much better with a bit of work.

Other than the heated seat wiring, never had much luck with seat add-ons.

Sheepskin,various gel pads,bead rider,etc. All were a disappointment.

Ever hear of Rogo ?  High tech air pressure system used for wheelchair patients.  Rick has one, tested for close to 300 miles,  :dunno2: seemed to work semi OK but spendy.

For me, sheepskins are nice.  I purchased a whole sheep's worth of skin many years ago and for some time I did use part of it as a seat cover on a Corbin dual tour.  Very comfortable but the problem on the dual tour was that the extra thickness of the sheepskin moved me forward on the seat which was not helpful.

I've thought about asking Russel if they could use sheep skin on the top of one of their seats.  That would be pretty nice, I think.

I got busy with other stuff and never dealt with complaining/sending it back.  I contacted him in May of this year and he told me he was too busy to deal with it until the beginning of August.  I have other seats so it's not a big deal to me.

I AM going to send it to him in a couple of weeks and will report back when I finally get things straightened out.

I have another one that I scored on Fleabay in like new condition for $150.  It's pretty much exactly the same but worked pretty well on a 3,000 mile ride on a K75S.

I also scored a Corbin Dual Tour with a passenger backrest on Fleabay for $50.  It turned out to be a custom one that's got the rider position about 2" back and I plan to put that on my K75 for a ride down the coast soon.  I put mucho miles on the one I had on my K75RT and liked it OK but it was a bit too far forward so I think this one will work out well.

I will never own another motorcycle without a Russell seat upgrade.   I have tried various seat brands on various motorcycles and nothing has ever compared.  When my wife told me that I must buy a $700 seat for any bike I buy - I think it gets her seal of approval as well - she was actually never going to ride again after a day on the stock K seat. First ride on the Russell she wanted to know what we were stopping for "at 150 miles, I need to get gas dear."

No, we took photo's and sent them in with height, weight and so on.  I got in on a 20% off group buy deal and Ride Ins were not allowed - and they are an extra $80 - even with 20% off my seat was $680.  Since I paid the same having the back seat generic or custom, I MADE my wife get on for pictures and submit the particulars. She is glad she did.  The back of my seat may be back about 1/2" to far, but that is not a real issue, it gives me some wiggle room.

I have the Corbin Gunfighter and it's the only K seat I've ridden.

It's definitely hard, but my my rear has been broken in by Brooks bicycle saddles, so I'm used to it.

I have a short 30" inseam and I wish the edges of the seat were a little smoother, but hey, it's a motorcycle, not a sofa.

I have been trying to get a RDL but one dickwit I found on fleabay wanted $500 to send to Australia it plus the seat price.
Does anybody have one for a reasonable price?

I'm really interested in how the Dual canyon Matches up against the dual tour on an RS. I have heard that the canyon is preferable for the the Riding position of the RS. Get back to us on that shooter! Ill be buying one soon. :P

Been happy with my dual canyon since 1988.  After running coast to coast with the stock seat the Corbin was a godsend.  Had to send it back to get recovered once, but it's held up pretty good.  Don't even think about it anymore.

Am I the only person that thinks the stock seat is really comfortable? :dunno

I am curious if there are any single seat options. I will never ride 2 up and wouldn't mind a flatter cargo area, or possibly a way to put a top box with a backrest for myself
