Gen 1 tragkorb Repairs
« on: March 24, 2024, 05:01:48 PM »
The Gen 1 cases on my 1992 K75S were in rough shape when I got the bike. Problem areas included:

- Cracks in the cases (both large and small)
- Seal channels on the inner cases (mangled or separated)
- Seals (dried up or missing)
- Both lid restraints
- Latches (top and side)

Because fixing broken stuff is my jam, I decided to give it a try. I’ve learned Gen 2 cases are better than Gen1, and Gen 3 cases are better yet. If the repairs fail, replacements can be found.

Did you ever make any progress on those hardcase repairs?

Mine need a couple hinges, which are available, scared to see how mucho CAD pesos that will be at Psycho-Jerks in Edmonton.

I also need a latch, the one that holds the case to the frame, not one of the two that hold the case shut...  Any ideas on source?

My 92 K75 RT came to me missing one side-panel (side cover?)  I made a replacement out of sheet metal.

Excellent video.  I've done the latches of one of my saddlebags that way, and some have commented that "hardware store" latches look like "hardware store" and not up to the fine fit and finish of a BMW.

I say these adjustable latches are far far far superior to the stock BMW latches in terms of function as a latch.  I got mine at a boat-stuff store, in stainless steel, probably cost more for one latch than Grosbeak paid for four.  The downside of stainless steel latches is that the paint I spray on them just flakes off.  The plated steel ones would probably hold paint a little better.

Well Done and Thank You Grosbeak.

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.
