Do I need to reset my ABS when I install a different ABS brain?
« on: December 17, 2023, 06:24:40 PM »
I have a “ working“ ABS brain on its way to me and I’m wondering if I need to reset anything when I install the new brain.

I wouldn't bother unless the ABS idiot didn't stop flashing at me.

As one of the instruction manuals somewhere on this website indicates, the ABS brain loses its memory if deprived of power for an extended time. I installed a used ABS brain to replace my faulty one, the light wouldn't stop blinking, I reset it following the somewhat arcane process of jumper wire from middle pin on the blue plug to ground, press ABS button, hold it, turn key on but don't start bike, wait 20 seconds, turn off, disconnect everything, go for a ride and see if the light goes out.
It's a mini-celebration when it works. Sometimes the phase of the moon may be wrong or I was not holding my grimace just quite right and I'd have to repeat.

I'd go down Mighty Gryphon's road and think positively but PMP makes a valid point that grimace training could help. Regardless, this is where I'd go if those approaches didn't work.

I've replaced/swapped many ABS brains. The answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no.

It's really a non-issue though since the reset process is so simple.

I had my ABS brain repaired by Tosi in Japan.
No reset was required after installation.

Mentioning Tosi, several years ago I had a problem clearing a fault on my K75RT ABS.  Tosi suggested unplugging it and letting it sit for a day or two to allow all the capacitors to discharge and clear the memory of any faults.

I would guess that the time in shipping is more than enough to reset the innards of your "new" ABS brain.

Before sending an ABS brain to Tosi you should open it up to see if water has leaked into it. He can't fix an ABS brain that's been "flooded."

(More common with the K100RS4V/K1/K1100 ABS I brains that mount behind the battery with the connector facing up.)

Good point, did not know that.

Regarding MG and the time for transport after repair.  I do remember that in my communication with Tosi regarding the repair that he had installed it in his bike for testing so it may have been reset then.

All's good since 2011.

Holy sheep shit!  No more pressing the ABS button every 10 minutes.

At least it was working right when it wasn't working right. Find comfort in that.  :laughing4-giggles:
