How to install 22L top case
« on: May 27, 2022, 12:00:21 PM »
Got ahold of a 22L top case for my K100, but can't find a guide to install besides the below (under 22L Top Case Installation), which looks more complicated than necessary given I already have the "rack" component installed. I just can't figure out how to install the "mounting plate" into the existing "rack". Anything I'm missing here?

Holding up the rear a little, slide the front of the mounting plate up under the tail rack. Lower the rear of the plate and slide it back so that the two tabs at the back of the plate go into the rectangular holes in the rear of the tail rack.

When you insert and turn the mounting post in the top case don't press the mounting rod down too hard or you can scratch the tail cowl roundel.

Once you have the 22L case mounted make sure that it's firmly mounted. If not then you may need to add a spacer washer inside of the case on the mounting post to get the case firmly mounted. If it's loosely mounted then it's POSSIBLE that the case can fall off while riding. (It's never happened to me but I've heard reports of that happening.)

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Thanks, that worked perfectly! It does seem quite secure, but I may add the washer anyway and maybe some kind of security wire in addition.

A mates 22Lt box even with extra washers wobbled side to side. I ended up up gluing strips of insertion rubber on the underside of the box where it sits on the rack.

+1
I used Ensolite foam and it has worked well, too.

Good recommendation— taking the bike with installed 22l for a test ride today, I did notice more clunking noise than usual when going over bumps. I wonder if the foam would help there?

We considered foam when we looked at eliminating the movement of the box. However foam loses compressibility over time and degrades quicker. The insertion rubber will last heaps longer. It is also beneficial to cover the tail in self adhesive film to stop scratches, I used black deck tape. As an aside I also used the insertion rubber on my loose paniers which shook around. It was glued into the channel on the paniers this hooks over the rail on the bike.

:nono2: Too light weight you would have to use the super heavy duty ones. The ones designed 12 months usage.
