WTB–Looking to buy K75
« on: August 03, 2021, 04:23:41 PM »
I’m looking to buy a 1993 K75 with under 40k miles. It has an oil leak by the second exhaust flange nut. It has also worked itself to the exhaust by turning the exhaust pipe blue. I am attaching fotos. Any ideas what’s causing this. The bike seems to be ok everywhere else. Idles good.
Thx

The blue is a hue of stainless exhausts—some get it more than others. Could it come from overheating, maybe, but mine's blue and runs ok. As you can see from the photo, there's not many places for leakage at that area. It could be blowback from a leaking timing chain cover or leakage from a head gasket. Did you swipe it with a finger and take a whiff? Be certain there is no coolant mixed in with it.

Blue often results from overheating due to a lean mix, but it's not on the bends or near the engine, so I'll say it's not that. Because it's on the straight bits and strangely speckled, I'll punt it's excessive carbon deposits heating up. Maybe it was too often idling or lugging, ask the owner about its history (like maybe he delivered mail at some stage)

Hopefully it's an after market exhaust but it looks original I think.

Stick your finger deep up the exhaust, you should have a small amount of black on your finger (like you probably will from your car for comparison) it should be dry, not oily.

I don't think it would be from running rich because of the funny speckled pattern.

I'd say to the owner that's a sign of overheating which is the worst thing you can do to an engine and make an offer based on that.

You want to know if the engine is cold before starting. If there's a puff of blue smoke at start up or deceleration it could mean oil from valve stem seals, smoke on acceleration could mean worn rings.

I'd look for signs if the mileage is genuine.

Has this bike been idle for a length of time during it's life?  40K miles says there's a good chance that at one time or another it was lightly used and may have sat for a year or more.  This could cause a stuck injector that would make one or more cylinders run lean enough to blue the exhaust.  Cleaning the injectors if the engine isn't running well isn't a very bad job.

Who knows what could have been on the pipes to cause the speckled pattern?  I know mine get splashed a lot, and are the least cleaned parts on my bikes.  K bike pipes are usually pretty ugly looking, I wouldn't worry about them as long as the engine runs well.

The oil is something I have seen on my bikes.  I suspect it comes from an exhaust gasket that isn't sealing well combined with a bike that is frequently parked on the side stand.  We all know oil gets into the cylinders when parked on the side stand and is blown out the exhaust.  If the gasket isn't tight, some of it will leak out and get on the studs and nuts.  Again, if the engine is running well, I wouldn't get too concerned.

How does the rest of the bike look?  If it's in good shape I wouldn't worry about it.  It's almost broken in.

The bike did sit for about a year or more. I’m sure it sat on the side stand for most of that time. The turn off was I was not allowed to test ride it. I did idle the bike long enough to see if it was leaking from the weep hole and possibly having a rear main seal leak. I’m on the fence with it because l  have a K75 and was really looking for a K100 or K1100. I’m not looking to tie up my garage space with a big project. I did see a post that it could be a connecting rod gone bad. That would be too much work when for the price or a little more I could find a bike with little to no problems.
Thx to those that have responded already and I welcome anymore input.

I have an '88 K100RS Special Edition barn find in good shape that I restored a couple years ago.  It's the third brick out in the garage and hasn't been run further than the end of our road a couple times.  It really needs an owner who will use it.

Ready to ride with new tires, battery, fuel tank internals, all fluids and wear items changed, entire bike has been disassembled and detailed and checked.  Splines look new.  ABS works.  Many new parts.  48,634 miles.  Not perfect, but very nice even up close.

Will sell it for the $1900 I have in it.

Look at the 4V K100RS. 10 more HP, better brakes, better suspension.
