Low Beam Whack and a Fix
« on: July 08, 2021, 03:24:12 PM »
My low (main) beam stopped working. No warning. The bulb monitoring unit (BMU) light was not lit. Checked the headlight connector with a new bulb. No change. Partially pulled the switch apart. No burn, no melting. The contact for the main beam was either worn down or recessed or whatever. I tested this contact (number 56 on the switch) with a tiny piece of aluminum foil. It confirmed that power was running to the light. Btw, the passing beam and high beam functioned perfectly. So, I opted to solder a small dollop of solder onto the contact and was able to work that down with a flat head jewellers screwdriver, boxcutter blade and emory board (nail file cut down to fit) and it worked. I did not pull the entire switch apart and risk losing balls and springs all over my garage! The 2 parts you will have to remove are the LH turn signal thumb switch and the horn thumb switch. The turn signal is retained by a small Phillips head screw. Take that out and the thumb paddle releases. The horn paddle does have a small spring and brass pin inside. Be careful (but not stressed) about taking this out. Just keep an eye on things and take your time. Removing these two items allows you to take the switch internal body out of the housing and will allow you to work on the worn contact, if you so choose. Clean where you can, lube where you can and Deoxit everything. And then, as the Mighty Gryphon and others have said, order yourself a relay from Eastern Beaver and put that issue to bed forever! Good luck. This might save you a bit of dough. PS - the last photo is the soldered contact filed down smooth

Thanks for describing your fix.

BTW, the BMU does not monitor the state of the headlight and will not light up if the headlamp fails.

Thanks Rob. I appreciate that. Just brake light and tail light bulb for the BMU?

Nice fix!!!  Just don't run too long with that solder on the contact.  The current that runs through it can heat it enough to melt again.  Get that relay kit installed.

Yes, just brake light and running lights.
