Readily available replacement for K1100 front brake switch
« on: September 28, 2020, 12:38:03 PM »
Hi,

I found out that a small brake fluid leak in my K1100 front master cylinder had caused the brake switch to melt and fail.  I searched for an OEM replacement but the Ebay offerings were very pricey. The K1100 front brake switch is a readily available microswitch, able to be sourced at many online electronics parts supplier, and costs just a couple dollars.

A compatible replacement is an Omron Electronics SS-5GL13 (Datasheet).

It has the exact same dimensions and mounting hole placement, making it a drop-in replacement.  It will be necessary to clip the lead from the old switch and solder it onto the new one.  The Green/Black wire goes to Common terminal and the Grey/Blue wire goes to NC terminal.

Equivalent Switches
There are a number of different manufacturers that have similar microswitches and you'll have to search the datasheets to make sure the dimensions are the same.  Critical dimensions are package dimensions (19.8mm x 10.2mm x 6.4mm) and hole spacing (9.5mm) and hole diameter (2.3mm).  You may have to bend the lever a bit to get it to work reliably; I had to.

C&K LCA10150T09SC (Datasheet)
Panasonic ABS1412509  (Datasheet)
Honeywell ZM50E10E01  (Datasheet)

Thank you, Rob!!!  The same switch in my '91 K100RS just gave up the ghost this very morning.

It was a slow death and I had been watching ePrey for a couple weeks hoping to find a reasonably priced pre-loved switch to replace it.  I had gone that route as the $60 OEM price was totally off the chart, and I couldn't seem to find an exact replacement at Mouser or any of the other electronics vendors I have done business with in the past.

If they ever open the border again I'll buy you a fish and chips.

No problem. What a coincidence! Mine died sometime during the winter and I only got around to changing it today.  I was becoming increasingly paranoid that the police would ticket me for no brake light, not to mention the risk of being rear ended by a cager.

The switches arrived today and after an hour and a half in the garage I have the new switch installed and it works perfectly.

Thanks Rob!

Now I just need to figure out the new problem with the right front turn signal.

Glad to hear that the switch worked out for you.  Can't beat the price of the repair.

Hope the group gets together once the border gets reopened and this pandemic settles down.

I thought K's used the torpedo plunger for the brake light, mine went bad and I jury rigged a universal switch rather than investing half of what my bike's worth in a new one.

The 4 valve bikes use a standard Microswitch instead of the plunger.
