When you tried to start your engine the low battery caused the starter relay contacts to weld closed.

That caused the starter to try to run until the battery was completely discharged.

Then, when you put the charger on the battery, I bet you still had the battery connected to the bike.  That caused all the current from the charger to just go to the starter through the welded relay contacts.

You need to get the relay contacts unstuck before you put the battery on the charger.

Don't use a trickle charger/maintainer.  They don't put out enough current to charge a dead battery.  You need a charger that puts out at least 4 amps.

Last, if your battery has been sitting for more than a month or two with a low charge there is a good chance the plates are sulfated, and it will not reliably hold a charge anymore.  Be prepared to buy a new battery.

Thanks for the sharp reply
No once it stopped turning over I took the battery off and put it on the bench top charger . How do I get the relay contacts unstuck . Is it possible to salvage the relay or will it be new job .

Motobins (in the UK) has the starter relay in stock for 44 quid. A little pricey, but it's new and not smacked about to break the welded bodge.
Good luck, it's an easy fix, and teaches one to always have a full charge battery. Breathe deep ... Cheers!

If you charged the battery out of the bike and it didn't take the charge I suspect that it is as deceased as a stiff parrot.  Try one more charge and if it doesn't take, you need a new battery.

As for the start relay, remove it from the relay box and open it up.  You can separate the contacts and clean them up with a bit of 600 wet or dry paper.

Thanks for everyone’s advice . The battery is back on a slow charge till tomorrow . Going to take off the starter relay and open it up . See if it’s salvageable. If not it’s hand in pocket and new

Yes just confirmed battery . Just put my jump pack on it fired up straight away no issues
New battery it is then . Maybe not a cheap one this time . Any battery recommendations in the U.K.

Great to hear you figured out the challenge, and saved yourself a purchase of the relay.
Halford's will probably tax a good 70-75 pounds for a replacement battery if I remember with any clarity. There's got to be less expensive places.
Good Luck ... I have no idea if Brexit has an impact.
