Blackstone Labs Oil Report
« on: July 23, 2020, 11:22:34 AM »
Hey all,

I recently sent in a sample of oil to Blackstone Labs just to get an idea for how the oil is doing over time. It was nice to see averages were close to what would be seen with lower mileage use. Not sure if anyone would be interested in this, but it's nice to see some measurable idea of "health" for the bike.

Good stuff!

Blackstone are solid people, I sent them unlabeled samples of 2 oils (straight out of their bottles) and they identified brands and even individual batch numbers for each oil. As well as telling me that both oils were suitable for piston aviation engines and overkill for anything on wheels.

Great info, thanks for sharing.  I use Mobile 1 15W50 with Bosch oil filters and change oil at about 5K miles.  This may be overkill and I may send off a sample to gauge the quality of oil after that amount of use.

Do you use an OEM paper air filter?
I ask because my friend runs a beef farm and has a number of farm machines and Duramax pickups that he sends oil samples to Blackstone to gauge wear on these engines and proper maintenance intervals.  One of his employees put a K&N air filter on a pickup and he found the level of contaminants in the oil rose significantly resulting in him going back to the pleated paper.

I use the Bosch oil filters. I'm not sure what the insides are made of though... I'm a purolator guy though.

Sorry for any confusion, I meant air filter.
