Mysterious Gas Tank Piece?
« on: May 16, 2020, 12:36:40 AM »
Hi, all! Long-time reader, first time poster. I’ve got a bit of a mystery on my hands. I’m tearing down my ‘95 K75S trying to track down a startup issue (which I think I’m close to fixing, thanks to these forums) and I get to the gas tank. There’s some debris in it, probably from old gas that sat in the tank for months, and as I’m cleaning it out a little plastic cap thingy falls onto the ground. I haven’t been able to figure out where it came from by going through parts fiche or searching the web. What is it? Does it have a fun German name? Will my bike explode if I don’t put it back? These are the questions keeping me up at night. Any wisdom you can share would be appreciated.

If it is blocked off at one end it could be the blanking cap fitted to the spigot on some on brands of fuel filters. It is removed when fitting the filter, it might have been accidently dropped into the tank. More piccies would help determine if it is a blanking cap.

That just might be it! I don't have any better pics at the moment, but it is closed off at one end and had some of the old-gas-debris in it. I believe the previous owner replaced the fuel pump just before I bought the bike, maybe he did the filter too. The filter is a BMW-brand one. I'll see if I can get a better picture of the cap tomorrow.

Thanks Martin!

If you have a spare filter try fitting it onto the spigot, alternatively the hole should be about 8mm.

Here’s another pic... Calipers do say it’s about 8mm

I don't recognize that cap as part of the tank's interior assembly. I have a '95 K75, too. If I found it in my tank, I'd discard it and move on.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm gonna finish cleaning out the tank today and see if I can get this thing back on the road.  112350
