Handlebar dashboard switches
« on: April 04, 2020, 01:10:08 AM »
Quick question about the dashboard over the handlebar mounts.  I have three switches.  From L to R the first one is unmarked, the second is the is the triangle which I think in the brake light test and the third is the ABS.  Since the first switch isn't marked as the heated grip then what does it do?  It does toggle like the other two but, I don't know what it activates if anything.  Is it just an extra for use as an added accessory?

The switch with the triangle is the hazard warning light. The unmarked switch could be lot's of things even a dummy just to fill the hole, fan override, high altitude switch. Have a look and see if it is wired and are the wires OEM or aftermarket.

K11 left most switch is heated grips. With 200K the switch marking have long worn off.

Looking at both of my switch banks, on the '97 as it left the factory L-R: blank, hazard, blank, ABS.  My '97 does not have heated grips.
On my '95 as it left the factory L-R:  windscreen, hazard, heated grips, ABS.  Since I got the bike I changed the windscreen switch from the dash pad to the left bar with a later model bar switch.

Currently I have used the left blank location on both bikes for my manual fan switch.

Ya.  That's kinda why I asked first.  There isn't much that isn't worn off.   :laughing1:

I appreciate that.  The fiche wasn't real clear for me.  I'll have to pop the top and see if it is being used for sure.  If not, I might consider this for the fan control.  I found one of your other posts to point me in the right direction.   112350

For a manual fan switch, connect to the 'blue/yellow' wire of the relay-- thru a switch-- then connect the other side of the switch to a good ground.

Some automotive supply retailers and or electronics shops have clear adhesive sheets of assorted stickers for identifying switch use. However once in position it is advisable for durability to apply clear lacquer over the top. I just sprayed some into the cans plastic lid and then used a small brush to coat the sticker. I have marked the switches as a fan switch and a light bar switch and they have been rotated.

That looks real nice Martin.  Will keep that in mind when I start the rehab.  I checked mine a little further today and it's definitely wired and some of it goes over to the throttle grip.  Supposed to be 60 tomorrow so, I going out for a spin and check it out then.

FWIW

When I first got my K100RS there was a center hazard light switch in the middle of the dash and two factory 'filler blanks' on the left and right side.   I added OEM heated grips - so I placed the switch for that on the right.  I also bought an OEM generic switch for some add-on LED running lights.   The BMW parts fiche has a number of different 'symbol inserts' for the OEM switches so you can pick an appropriate insert for whatever the switch is used.

Good to know.  I might spring for that symbol insert once I get to that point.  I was thinking it might be an ejector seat activation switch but, nope, heated grip switch.  It does work and on both grips!  Riding yesterday at 62 degrees they were too warm to be comfortable on bare hands.  ALMOST can't wait until fall to try them with gloves.   :laughing1:
