Instrument Panel Swap Double Check
« on: February 29, 2020, 04:08:17 PM »
Sorry to keep taking over the board...but not sorry enough, I guess. My instrument cluster is whack, but I've been running on tach only for the past few years. Found a decent replacement on Ebay (cracked front plastic, but better than mine) for a decent price (maybe one of you is the 1 current bidder...).

Before I bite, any issues I'm not foreseeing? All the mounts look fine to me.

The crack in that Motometer lens has probably allowed moisture to infiltrate its guts and create corrosion. I think you can find one in better condition, especially when considering many of these are being removed during cafe racer projects. Determine whether your cluster has round pin or square pin connectors at the back. Although mating up the differing connectors has been done successfully by some owners, having round-to-round or square-to-square connection is desirable.

I replaced my '84 K100 original unit with a newer one with differently shaped pins. The connectors fit good and it works.
Only thing that doesn't work are the fuel lights. They sometimes light up without any logic. As far as i know the sender in the pump unit is different in older models.

If you haven't purchased one already, try to get one that has Goretex ports on the rear panel. These were installed in later models to minimize condensation within the works, but you can install some yourself if necessary. As teuski has already indicated, it's possible that pins and sockets of differing profiles can be mated and function ok.
