I sent them an email asking about the alternator and if they know when the last spline lube might have been done. Thanks for the heads-up.
Look at the rear of the alternator (under a small shroud on the RH side) for black plastic on a 50A.

This one is 1500 miles away so I'll have to ask the dealer to look at it, but good to know info for bikes I can look at.

So following up with the Grand Rapids dealership on the '94 K75RT, the gentleman I spoke to there said that the 94 and up bikes had a revised, hardened tranny input shaft that doesn't need the 40K mile spline lube. Fake news?

The moto was manufactured in September of '93. That is at the transition point between 1993 and 1994 models. It has the Y-spoke wheels of earlier models instead of the tri-spoke wheels of the later models. I'd want verification. The alternator amperage is a good means and easy enough to determine. Was its output determined?

Regardless of whether the transmission input splines are hardened, if the clutch disc hub splines aren't cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals, clutch engagement can be affected and the splines themselves can be eroded until they stop engaging with the input shaft. Forward motion stops. 40K intervals for cleaning and lubrication seem to work for most riders.

The driveshaft's rear socket splines and the final drive input shaft splines are subject to disabling wear if not thoroughly cleaned and lubricated. That should happen yearly or with each tire change.

What was disclosed about their condition?

They don’t have a history on the bike. They had an acceptance checklist that looks smart but only covers obvious stuff.

So no verification that either spline service was performed? I would bargain for dealer inspection service as a condition of sale and when they balk confirm my cash offer just dropped $500.

I’m keen to confirm if my 94S has some cool kryptonite infused spline shaft.

Ps:  who has a stripped k75 drive shaft with stripped splines I can buy/have?  Motobins offers a spline “collar” replacement.. I want to try out my new welder certification and TIG gear on a drive shaft restoration.  Hohoho

I put the last 7 of the VIN into the search engine at RealOEM.com and confirmed that the bike was built in September of 1993 and was built with the 50 amp alternator.

I have owned five bricks so far with mileage ranging from 32,000 to 126,000 with varying service histories.  None of them has had spline issues on the transmission input shaft(or the drive shaft/final drive for that matter).  At 54,000 miles, I would suspect that the shaft and final drive aren't bad either, especially since the bike in question appears to have been cared for and the mileage suggests regular use.  Unless you are buying from an owner who lets you pull the final drive you are going to have a tough time confirming spline condition and have to trust their word.

Any word on the condition of the ABS?  Does the ABS warning light go out?  Does the engine start easily and idle smoothly?  What does the inside of the tank look like?  Do the master cylinders for the brakes, especially the rear, leak?  Do the brakes have firm pedal/lever feel?  When was the bike last registered and inspected for the DMV?  The answers to these questions can give you some confidence that the bike has been well maintained despite the lack of records.

Looking at the photos, I notice that it has AMA and BMWMOA stickers.  That may imply that at least one previous owner put some miles on it and took care of it.

Further down this road: the dealer checked their records and found that they sold the bike in 1993, and the title they have has a 2004 date so at least two local owners. Last owner registered it a hundred miles away. The person I'm talking to said she will get their resident Airhead guy to give it another once-over to see if he can determine anything useful that might move this sale one way or the other. Hopefully I can decide tomorrow.

Hmmm, an Airhead guy evaluating a brick is like Ozzie Osborne evaluating Bach. However, maybe he owns a brick, or knows a lot about them ... caveat emptor. Good luck in your quest.

Then again, "Motor oil's motor oil", right? :johnny

Fer Gawds sake, don't go there!!!

IMO, a K75RT with 55K on it and an iconic 22l in back for $1800 that starts, idles and runs well from cold start to warm, has no ABS warning, goes through the gears and stops well is not a bad deal.  Those are things that even a sales person should be able to confirm in about 15-20 minutes, let alone a mechanic, even if they are an airhead mechanic.

I know the splines are a crap shoot.  They are on every deal unless the seller lets you pull the final drive.  You gotta look at the rest of the bike and decide if it's worth taking a chance.  At 55k miles and original paint in the condition shown in the photos, I would guess that the odds are in your favor for good splines.

The AMA and BMWMOA stickers tell me that somebody before you was a serious rider.  I would guess that person took good care of the bike during their ownership.  Depending on how long that was, even if a later owner didn't maintain the bike, the time and miles of neglect are less than the 55k shown.

Having said that, even the best machines will need some work after 28+ years.  The worst problems seem to come from years of idleness as the fuel rots everything in the tank, electrical stuff corrodes, and rubber rots.  Starter brushes, ignition switches, engine seals are all items you need to consider needing work even on well maintained bikes.  The seat and paint seem to indicate some outdoor storage in the sun.  That may be an additional bargaining point, but don't count on it.  If the paint is Mystic Red, it may not actually be faded, that color photographs and displays funny.

The idleness issue is why I suggested checking when the bike was last registered and inspected.  A recent registration and DMV inspection will give you some idea of if and how long the bike has sat idle.  I know that NY state has the mileage written in the inspection sticker.  If that is the case in Michigan, it might give you a little more information on the recent past history of the bike.

Thanks Johnny. They flat-out refused that request for weak-arse reasons so the deal is "No Deal!!"

Actually got a more knowledgeable dude on the phone and he advised against the purchase since I couldn't come look at it, plus the five to seven hunnert bucks to ship it to Ole New Mexico. So the search continues. Mang.
