Verify Speed in Gears
« on: December 14, 2019, 05:23:15 PM »
Can any of you fellow K75s riders verify this:
At an indicated 5000 RPM in fifth gear my speedo reads 70 MPH.

The bike is new to me (I traded for it, another story another post)
just want to check the accuracy of the speedo.
The bike drives like a dream, and the engine just sings at that RPM,
just seems like the bike could have benefitted from a sixth gear, given
todays typical hwy speeds (granted in 93, we were all still
under 55mph max I think?)..
Thanks in Advance.

Yep,  I have a k75S and at 4,000rpm it was reading about 92km/h, that works out to 71mph at 5,000rpm

I don't think that means your speedo is accurate though. When I've checked speedos for accuracy, at readings of 100km/h,  the actual speeds were usually about 96km/h.

Probably because I rode low revving cruisers before a brick,  I also thought bricks should have a sixth gear, but now I appreciate the power and torque we get from them.

I'm with Daveson. I get 24 km/h per 1,000 RPM which would give you 120 K, or a bit over 70 MPH at 5,000. And I am also convinced that my speedometer reads high, that is, I'm actually going slower than what reads on the gauge.  I don't worry about it; I keep up with  traffic and any police I've run into while riding on my own have been very understanding.

GPS's are pretty accurate and can be used to confirm your speed.

Just unzipped a file from the http://www.kforum-tech.com/Tech-page.html under Miscellaneous category

Calibrate your speedo, fix ABS,TPS,Motronic with K-Diag

Karamba a Speedo App, input your tire size, etc... heard it mentioned before

70mph at 5 grand sounds about right.  All the brick speedos I've come across seem to run 5-10% high despite the fact the odometer and tripmeter are very accurate.  There is an internal calibration adjustment in the cluster.  You can use Karamba to calibrate it, but it's easier to just run the calibration pot to the stop.  That's where they end up when I do the calibration thing.

As far as 6th gear, I would guess that every new brick rider goes through the "looking for 6th" phase, but after a couple long trips comes to realize that they are now running down the highway at 65 in 4th.

sixth gear would be a nice feature but a larger fuel capacity would be better. I'm with the TMG on the finding myself in lower gear all the time.

While my bike is no 12,000 RPM Gixxer (not sure if the Suzuki actually goes to 12,000 RPM but it felt like it) it is extremely happy at 6,000 - 7,000 RPM.

It will exceed 120 miles an hour indicated which I have experienced very rarely and not for at least the past 15 years.

It's happiest and I'm at my most comfortable at 90 which sees the tacho at 6,000.  Smoooooooooooth.  (if it isn't smooth, one thing to check might be your driveshaft to final drive splines).

Thanks to all for the prompt and helpful replies. As part of the refresh, I did clean the speed sensor located
back on the final drive as recommended.. Your replies verified that my speedo is OK and I didn't make it worse
by cleaning the sensor!.

Speed Sensor did not appear to be dirty, but the maintenance
was listed as routine, and I did not know if it had EVER been done.
