Splines?
« on: November 11, 2011, 06:36:22 PM »
I've had my '86 k100 for about 3 months now. Someone I met asked me if I lubricated the splines. Being that I didn't lubricate anything (& just didn't want to sound dumb :-[) I said no. I've come across a few posts about splines, but nothing with full detail. So here I ask while now feeling dumb, what the hell is a spline and how do i know to lubricate it? Is a spline just a bmw thing?

Dr. L. Duck Hubbard explains: Splientology

Not unique to BMW.  Other shaft driven bikes like Goldwings have them as well.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

Pagman, are you ever in for an education!  Splines and BMWs have provoked endless tech articles, and debate.
