Salvage Title Bike

Any one here work on getting a regular title for a bike that had a salvage title? I picked up two K bikes off of Craigslist, an almost running bike and a "parts bike" that had been in accident and has a PA salvage title. It's a 91 100 4v RS, beside destroying the fairing, losing a rear turn signal and bending the handlebar it seems fine and I was able to get it running. It sounds good, so I am thinking of investing in some parts to fix it up to be streetable again. Before I invest some $$$, I guess I like to know how much of a hassle is it to get it a proper title? From what little I could find on the internet I will have to get it inspected before I can get the title changed. Anybody here done that before?

I'd say it depends on what you call a hassle—waiting for bureaucracy or dodging sniper fire to salvage food from a garbage pile. New York explains the process fairly clearly. You've probably seen this.  Patience and mechanical aptitude are probably most important for fulfilling the process, along with money for fees. :-)

Maybe somebody New York who has done it will chime in here. Maybe volador can poll his Sisypheans to supply an experienced-based account from one of the society's members.

Best bet would be to stop by your local DMV.  Then check with the New York State DMV website.  Anything you hear elsewhere will be just second and third hand conjecture.

When  the Moby Brick got totaled, it was easier to get a frame with clear title from a bike breaker in Colorado than to have the frame checked and the title replaced.

I would be concerned about the straightness of the frame.  Was the bike dropped, or was it the victim of a vehicular assault?  If it was a drop and slide, the frame is probably okay.  If it was an assault, all bets are off, and, personally, I could never trust it.

i gotts a eleven hundert rs on salvage title from original owner that was stolen... the insurance company paid off before the moto was recovered free of damage...

the insurance company gave him 1st opportunity to buy it back from a total claim...

in indiana back then a call to the local popo gotts leo dispatched to verify vin against salvage title... popo filled out paper and i gotts salvage title switched to rebuilt title...

then after all that and years later i had a claim... uninsureds fault... my insurace would not pay off becsuse they had already paid off on that vin before...

it was a call to the state insurance inspector that gotts immediate payoff... seem they wanted my premiums on a totaled moto butts they didnt wanna make me whole...

so... salvage and rebuilt titles can be problematic... butts you can getts you some yeeeehaaaaa along the way...

it was dropped, it then sled into something that destoryed the fairing. the engine and frame has no marks. i need to check if the front wheel is true, the back one is. no dents in the tank.

it other slight twist, the salvage title is from PA. i will try to call NY DMV, but in the past that results in a long hold on the phone with no one answering. i find it best to go in person.

i could use some yeeeehaaaaaa, it is cold now, so no bike yeeeeehaaaaa for a while.

i did not read about a rebuild title in NY. it seemed to lead me to believe that i have to schedule an inspection at the dmv. if you pass you get a regular title. I better get use to trailering the bike.

4 yrs ago my cousin Veto registered moto in the Maple Syrup State through the mail with NYS return address & NYS drivers license
Mailed in :
1) local popo official letterhead stating vin check and bike is clean vin not stolen with LEO business card attached (he sweat a little, maybe moto was hot)
2) Maple Syrup State reggy form  crossed out "Maple Syrup State drivers license" put NYS driver lic# and NYS address
3) bill of sale for moto
4) check for tax   Maple Syrup State follows tax of "NADA clean trade-in book value" or some tax book guide he don't remember what the name
5) color copy of his drivers license

Few weeks later received Maple Syrup State registration stub since vehicle is older then 10 years no title issued and green license plates in mail
Few weeks later takes Maple Syrup State reggy stub and NYS DMV title transfer forms to DMV
Few weeks later receives clean NYS moto title

Everyone said Veto wasn't a sharp guy, fuhgeddaboudit

Thanks that link helped. The PDF of the application was where the most info was.

It looks like they charge $200 for inspection, not sure if that includes a NY title or if that is the next step and $$ after you pass the inspection. That page does say it is NOT a safety inspection... so what are they checking I wonder? Just the vin and if it rolls straight? There is a number listed to call (Tuesday to Thursday), so I will tomorrow ask.

That isn't news over here. :-) Of course, New York isn't New England but because the entire region's governance seems to envy California, it doesn't matter. Here's an extract from vermontbiz.
