K100LT Fresh Air Vents

I've seen these in the Riders Handbook for the K100LT, but I can't find any information on them, if they worked , could they be retrofitted to a K100RT for example.  Any info out there would be appreciated.

I have a picture in my Rider's Handbook, but it is small and poor quality so not worth trying to reproduce.  They are shown in the following parts diagram from Bob's BMW. I haven't been able to post a picture from the BMW Microfiche but they are shown under:

K100LT Frame, Body, Faring, Luggage (46) - 46-0117 - Casing Upper Part/Light Part numbers -46 63 2308089 and 46 63 2308090. The frames are the next two part numbers.

I tried attaching a photo but no luck. Maybe they were a US item only but the microfiche system would allow me to add them to my cart, so they must still be available somewhere.

retrofit... just cutts a whole in there and snapp them in...

now a question for you...

its not a fresh air intake... its a flap... now how the hell you expect to getts help here if you dont poast photos poast screen shots poast links... and miss identify the part...

answer my question... i wanna know...

I can see that went well.  BMW calls them Fresh Air Flaps. My mistake for calling them a vent.

That flap on the LT fairing doesn't seem to be a common feature on them when a review of online photos is undertaken. Maybe somebody who has one will chime in here. It's purpose eludes me, unless it's an escape hatch for a gerbil.

I have them,  but not on my registered bike.

Then there are also three slots in the "black infill panels" in front of your lower legs (don't know the proper word) I think it's to cool your lower legs on a hot day.

When I first started riding my brick (which was parked for years) my lower legs got hot from the engine heat,  for some reason it went away after a while.

I don't think there will be much benefit, and bricks are already unsymmetrical enough.

I've never tried them,  my registered bike doesn't have them.  But on a hot day my lower legs are the last thing that bothers me. But I just soldier on,  cause the pleasures greater than the pain.

I have a RT with them, I can't tell a difference with them open or close, the bike and rider are hot either way. I guess they look cool.

One of the bikes I rode with over the last three days was a K100LT and I did ask him about the vents. His answer was no discernable benefits.

Thanks for that.  Good to know.  It makes sense they don't work that well as the openings/slots in the inner fairing pieces by your knees would allow both the heat from the engine bay and fresh air.  If they had of made them so there was just the fresh air, it would have worked better. My R100RT at least has proper air vents. Looks like the old was better than the new.  Why doesn't that surprise me?

Look up these parts:

23    31 42 1 455 333    AIR INLET LEFT           0.05    1     $3.31
23    31 42 1 455 334    AIR INLET RIGHT   0.04    1     $3.31

These replace the rubber boots around the forks and add a "scoop" to direct more air into the RT/LT cockpit.
I thought is pretty effective on my first '85 k100rt.
I added some to my '91 k100rs 4v, but they don't seem to move much air into the cockpit.

The bike already has those deflectors and the bottom of the gas tank has the reflective material. I'm thinking of doing a few other things to help cool the gas tank as well.  I couldn't believe how hot the gas tank gets on this bike. Too hot to touch. I figure that  is a big part of what makes the cockpit hot, on a hot day.  On  our fall and spring days its OK, but in the heat of summer it gets a bit toasty.

number one thing you can do is remove all those rubber baffles between the fairing and engine that were designed to keep the heat under the tank...

the thing needs air flowing not dammed up for gawdssakes... let it breath... insulate the bottom of the tank.. and accept the notion that motos are hawt and uncomfortable...

fuel cooler if you gotts the gumption...

I've looked at some of the fuel mods and likely will go that route, including the fuel cooler. I agree, some of the rubber baffles, especially at the front of the gas tank could be removed to assist with airflow. Even a vented windshield would help get more air into the cockpit. I have seen also that a few years ago somebody came up with some body side panels that helped exit the heat behind the rider.

Several years ago I had a 2008 HD Softail that was a really hot bike to ride, especially in stop & go traffic. You could get aftermarket deflectors that mounted under the seat and kept the heat from the rear cylinder & rear exhaust from your legs, that coupled with an oil cooler made the bike rideable on hot days.

Hard to believe BMW would actually design the fairing on the bike the way they did.

the least hawt things are 1 removing the baffles 2 insulating the undertank 3 insulating the underseat 4 installing a solid piece blanket steering head to rear seat cowl which includes between frame rails and side covers...

forces everything out everywhere butts between your taint and your feet...

the last one i made was mylar... made pattern with paper... cut mylar to pattern... its was the perfect johmny blanket...

i dont run them anymore cause i learnt motos are supposed to be hawt... guess what... they right...
