New K100RS owner

I picked up an extremely affordable, running, and non-leaking 1985 K100RS from the original owner over the weekend.

Below is a picture in all its patchwork glory (the left side of the gas tank is half stripped). And bonus pic of my wife riding a flying micro brick. Hopefully I can keep this thing running.

Rotate the fuel tank cap 180º until a notch in its mounting flange lines up with a hole in the perimeter of the tank's opening. That hole is connected to a pipe that will divert to pavement any water that might accumulate around the cap and then infiltrate the fuel within the tank.

Yes, I believe aging might have precipitated the sale. I bought some shinko 705 tires but have not installed yet.

I don't think this bike ever spent a night outside, apparently it has new injectors and mechanically seems very sound for have over 60k miles.

However, I don't think I want to be riding around on 35 year old brake lines, so that and some new plugs are the next step.

sweet! I see an after-market rear shock and front fork brace so previous owner did some worth while additions. Hope the splines have been taken care of, if so you should get 200,000 miles or more out of that beast!
My 85 has 206,000 miles on it and still runs strong. Most everything is still original excluding consumables.

Welcome. Nice Floor!

Notable differences of the pre-85/86 K100 are the seat pan design with matching tail cowl section, the water/oil pump design changed, throttle cable design and fuel tank/fuel level sender/fuel return check valve.

Your '85 may have the European "hotter" cams known as "Finest Year K"

The pre-1985/86 has molded pillion handles as part of the seat pan, metal or plastic seat pan.
Post-1985/86 removed handles from seat pan and added handles to the tail cowl section.

Throttle cables have 2 versions and lower brackets. Cable lengths vary with handlebars.
#1 version- have a adjustment sleeve approx. halfway down length
2nd version black plastic collar at the lower end or a white plastic collar

Pre-1985 fuel tank has a rear mounting tab later removed.
Early fuel lever sender is a thermistor type later is a float type.

Check condition of the inside of fuel tank. Lowest portions are prone to corrosion when moto is left sitting for some time.

Thanks for the good info. A VIN search says the production date was 11/19/1984 and I don't see the vent line on the block so perhaps it has the older cams.

Something will need to be done with the tank, I'm not sure what was started here.
