K100 performance mods
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:56:13 AM »
Like any long time rider, I like more power.  Perhaps I haven't combed through the site enough, but I haven't found much about modifying the standard 2V K100 (mine's an '85).

I'm thinking about such things as module swaps, extra modules, exhaust swaps, or even turbos. Can anybody point me to threads I haven't found?

Luftmeister used to make a turbo kit.  And, I think there are other folks who make turbo kits for the 2v K100s:

There is a posting on the ibmwr tech pages about K-bike performance but it mostly talks about keeping the state of tune optimal.  Things like timing and TB sync.

Well, I just came across your post about the eram supercharger. What's that all about?

(To fill in some background. I have been riding since 1956, Now I'm 67, and while I gave up racing 30 some years ago, I wouldn't mind if my old brick performed better than the ZRX I sold a few years back.)

OK, so that's a myth...

What about module swapping" K1100 modules with Power Commander, etc.?

Check this out it did some performance boost http://k100rt.aforumfree.com/t1944-k1100-throttle-bodies-on-a-k100
Swaping the ECUs is not easy there are some tweaks with the MAF sensor that can help and you can get chips but they are very marginal on improvements.

You could megasquirt it, to give you closed loop fuel injection. All the stuff it would need is there, just wire in the megasquirt. I've been kicking the idea around for my K75.

Could also do spark with the MS on a K100 fairly easily, due to the 2-coil configuration.

Otherwise, just ride what you have. There really isn't that much more power to be had.

There's ALWAYS more power to be had. Sometimes it is easier to be had and sometimes it's a PIA to find.  I have seen a Luftmeister turbo'd K100 at  Sandia BMW and talked to the mechanics and those who have ridden it. It was a clean installation.

On my 2004 Bonneville Black, a simple swap of the ECU box lifted the point where the rev limiter kicked in by 600 rpm. It was amazing what a difference it made in the rideability of the bike and the acceleration (since I also changed both front and rear sprockets for gearing more suitable for the off-road riding I do).

The point of this thread was not to ask for speculation about what could possibly be done, but to seek input from those who have successfully modded their own bike.

Thank you, motodude and IngeK. That explains why the stories of turbocharging K bikes have been a mixed bag.

My next question is, do either of you have a turbo on your bike?

I would _like_ to have a turbo and an "extra" K-bike for it, but my bank account won't let me.

If I was seriously into going as fast as possible, which I'm not, I would get a 'busa or a Blackbird.  Probably a Blackbird (the black ones just look cool).  Although the new S1000RR would require some consideration too.

I'm not into seriously going faster, or going faster seriously, or going seriously faster.

I just like the ride on my Hun, and I would like more power ( I've got the handling sorted).  Just looking for people who have done it with their own bike, or who have seen posts on this forum about it.

I usually subscribe to the "If you want a faster bike, buy a faster bike" ideology. A K100 is plenty fast. If you want faster, get a k1100.

One very simple mod to make a K100 faster would be to swap in a K75 32:10 final drive.  On an 85 you'd also need to switch from a 16 spline drive shaft to a newer 20 spline drive shaft.

Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

That would make it Quicker, but not faster. Although, its already fast enough to reach handcuff speeds without issue.

I keep realizing that my K75 is faster than I think. It depends on how you drive it. If you wind it out in every gear (It doesn't mind), its very quick. K75 is quoted at 0-60 in 4.6, K100 in 4.4.

That specific mod is on my todo list for my K100.  I already have the FD, it just needs a trip to Hansens first.

I'm not sure how much quicker/faster/whatever it wil be but it should have a little more, "grunt" coming out of the corners.

If you want more grunt coming out of turns then just run it a gear lower than usual.  Works on all of the K bikes.

You've probably got a 31:11 FD now so a 32:10 should give you about a 13.5% increase in torque - that should register on the butt dyno. ;D

That's true, of course, about the transmission gear.  It would work better w/ a 6-speed.  Although I really like the way the gears get closer together the higher you go.  All vehicles should be that way IMO.

Riding my K75 for the last 20 years I've developed a method when it comes to gear selection.  1) Get in the right gear _before_ the corner. 2) If the caution sign indicates 25 or less, use 2nd gear; if the caution sign indicates 35 or less, use 3rd gear; if the caution sign indicates 45 or less use 4th gear.

It works fairly well assuming there are caution signs for the corners and eliminates the need to downshift in a corner.  Of course one could use a higher or lower gear for a given corner, but this has worked for me for 20 years and 116K (accident free) miles.

I have owned faster bikes.
I don't want a faster bike. I want a faster '85 K100.
It never ceases to amaze me how on forums people don't answer the question or point of the thread.

To repeat, What mods have K100 owners done to their own personal bikes, and how do they rate the mod?

So I guess I will continue to search threads on my own.
Having owned and raced BMWs since 1960, I am not particularly surprised.
