K1100 rattling noise. “ box of rocks “
« on: June 20, 2019, 12:20:34 AM »
I think this question has been asked before and some say this sound is normal in dry clutch  motorcycles specially the k12s.
This is my first K bike which I bought recently after 17 years of been unused.
Change the whole fuel system and started right away.  Except for this sound .

An ex BMW mechanic told me to ride it for a while  to see if It improves.
Next week I will install new set of brakes to ride it
My questions are :
1. Is this normal
2. Is it safe to ride it and like some say “ use some earplugs”
3. Do I have to open the clutch and lube it

Thanks so much

Sounds like it could be hardened rubber dampers in the output shaft of the engine. If so its a non urgent fix.

How much mileage does it have and does the odometer work?

Is it slightly quieter after say twenty minutes as if the rubber has got softer, and coming from the bellhousing, right side area?

I would say give it a full service, including gearbox input shaft lube, this is simple to do, for a non mechanic, one of the things I like about bricks. You don't have to remove the clutch to do this.

Maybe ride it to the BMW mechanic after a few tips from this forum, for his opinion.

I'll say the noise is not normal.

Have you pulled the alternator off yet?  You may have bad "monkey Knutz" in  the alternator drive coupling.  When the alternator is off, start the engine and see if the noise goes away.

It's a fairly common problem.

The bike has 20.000 miles The odometer works.  But It was parked for 17 years.  So I guess all rubber parts are dry.
