Heated Grip wiring ???

Hey guys and motobrick gurus,

My handlebar got bent in an unfortunate encounter with black ice.
Anyway, I got another one off of fleabay and have all the controls loose and ready to be transferred to the donor bar except that I don't know how to get the heated grip wires out of their tiny connector without the probability of breaking either it, the wires or both.

Those appear to be 1/4" spade connectors.  Use a small flat blade jeweler's screwdriver to leverage between the housing and the connector to push the locking tab out of the way.  The locking tab is shown in this picture.

Robert, The 1/4" you mention, these are way smaller than that. ...So you are saying the connector plug is not stock???... It may not be. I am the 3rd owner.

Johnny.........................Also, I have no idea how to hook the Heat Troller up to my grips????? Wouldn't know where to begin.

That looks like the stock connector, and I'm in the middle of a similar issue where one of the grips doesn't work and I'm trying to track it down. Power is getting past that connector so I fear the fault is somewhere between there and the grip, which might entail me having to pull the throttle grip out of the handlebar. The principle is the same as any connector that locks in place using some kind of a tab. You have to find something small and flat enough to get in there and depress the tab while gently pulling on the wire until it comes out. Don't force it though - you have to make sure the tab is pressed enough for the connector to escape...

Let me know how it goes ... I want to get mine done too, it's been out there on the lift for weeks because it's too cold to spend any time out there working on it.

 greetings...

the wiors between the undertank connector and the grips is a known fior starter due to their resistenance value...

discerning brickers posiconnect the wiors before the undertank connector and run new wiors to the crash pad and quick disconnect them to the grips...

i removed all wiors after undertank connector... and put coax connections and a wye on my grips... and a powerlet on the crash pad... plug in heat troller to powerlet... plug in wye... bam... adjustable heated grips...

posi locks and posi taps are the brickers friend...

dont over think it...

I am totally with you on that Johnny and I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to get rid of that crappy little connector. There's got to be a lot of juice flowing through that thing to heat those grips and I've never been comfortable with it.

First though, I'm going to need a translator to understand your valued input. Posiconnect I assume to mean 'replace the stock plastic connector with posi-lock connectors' like these:

But I'm not sure I want a heat-troller -- I just sprung for a new heated grip switch for the console and prefer to just use that since I don't need a vest or other heated gear here in Maryland -- just the grips.

I have had some luck releasing those contacts with an old pointy X-Acto knife blade. 

Be very careful, X-acto blades are sharp and can cut you!

you have oe 3 position switch... off low high... get your power from the undertank grips wiors and run new wiors...

solder and shrinkwrap... posilocks... spade connectors... there are many choices...

With the seemingly endless variety of terminals and connectors used in today's vehicles, I had to buy a universal terminal release set when working at the Chevy shop.

Once you know where the locking tab is located on the terminal it is usually just a matter of inserting a thin metal tool to push it in to release.  Patience and a gentle touch will prevent breaking the terminal or connector.

Where might I find those?  I haven't seen those at my Harbor Freight!  :O)

Remember to reset that locking pin to it's normal height when you re-insert them into the connector housing.  More than one person (who shall remain nameless :)) has put a connector back in where it didn't lock back in properly.  Then when reconnecting the two housings, the spade is forced out enough to have a bad connection.  On a high current application like heated grips, this is not good.

The wires would not go through the handlebar, I couldn't get them out. I finally gave up and put the replacement bar on the bike. So now I don't have heated grips.
Anyone know of aftermarket replacements that are good?

i use symtec... still gotta cut the wiors and fish them through the bars... will need new grips and some honda grip glue...

there are tricks... search symtec here at motobrick.com...

I think I'm going to go with the Oxford touring grips that Laitch posted. I don't want to try to snake wires through the handlebar, as some other a-market grips would have you do. That is a tight squeeze and too much of a hassle removing the bar again. Very small diameter opening through the center of the bar.
