Leaking after sitting for 1 month
« on: November 17, 2018, 09:38:23 AM »
Hello everyone.
I last rode my 87 k75 about a month ago. Last night I was going to wipe her down and found an oil spot about 4 inches in diameter. Traced the leak to cylinder 2 & 3. This leak occurred while the bike was sitting on center stand. What could it be?

What could it be?
Welcome, Steve. Thanks for putting your moto's model and year in your profile and for the good quality photos.  :2thumbup:

If by what could it be you mean where is it coming from, that would take some disassembly on your part to determine. Does it feel like undiluted oil or is it thinner?  Does it smell like oil or like sulfur? What's the level oil in the site glass? What is the level of coolant in the coolant reservoir? How well had the bike been running before now?

Expand your introduction. How long have you owned this moto? How many miles are on it? How many miles have you ridden it? Has it had any recent service? What has been its service history in general?

Bike has 34k miles. I bought it 2 years ago and I have put 2k miles since I've bought it. All highway miles. Bike was running perfect since it I got it. No service other than an oil change.

Thanks for the update. Answers to my questions might help provide clarity to the situation—at least for me.  :yes

Have you checked the valve cover gasket?  I have had mine leak(the one around the spark plugs) when I didn't get it tightened down properly.  Check the valve cover bolts, but be careful, they only take 6 ftlb of torque.

It's possible you have a stuck ring that is causing blow back into the airbox.  Does the bike use any oil?  Brick engines usually go a couple thousand miles before you need to add more than a couple ounces.  If your bike had been sitting idle before you got it it could very well have a stuck ring.  I had that problem on a K100.

Actually the oil level is right where it was 2k miles ago. This just started less than a week ago while the bike sat in my garage.

greetings...

so you dont think it could be gravity... do you think it could be static or residual pressure...

It's definitely gravity, but what needs to be done to stop the leak?

from the outboard location it could be the valve cover gasket.  The bolts have rubber grommets that actually hold the cover on, and the rubber gets hard and brittle and stops doing it's job.  the leak is actually pretty inconsequential looking, unless your garage floor is covered in Persian carpets you could chalk it up to the normal aging process (mine leaks but I just keep an eye on it)

Thoroughly clean the engine of any signs of fluid leaks and let it dry. Once dry spray suspect areas with spray on talc, fragrance is not important. Leave it overnight and then inspect for damp spots on the talc. If no leaks are detected start the bike and run it for a short while and check again. If still no leaks go for a ride and recheck. If still no signs of a leak it was probably a stray dog messing with you.
