BMW K75 Front Wheel Bent... Options
« on: August 09, 2018, 01:13:38 PM »
Hello All,

Recently was driving through the city and hit a nasty pothole, bent the front wheel where the air is slowly seeping out.

Could a K100 front wheel work on a 88 K75?
Are there aftermarket replacements that don't cost an arm and a leg?

If anything, I will find a wheel repair shop that could possibly fix this.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi - A k100 wheel will fit as long as it is the same type. There are no aftermarket replacements unless you have them made. I recommend e-bay as your best option. Good luck

Depending on the size of the ding it may be able to be safely repaired by a reputable wheel straightener. Post of photo of it.  And welcome to the forum!

I am not 100% sure, but I believe it states in the service book not to attempt to straighten the rims if bent.

I had my wheels straightened with no issues, though you are right it does say it should not be done

Here's a link to a great page on BMW motorcycle wheels - part numbers, interchangability, etc.

I have an excellent condition K75S black wheel and a couple of Y spoke K 75 silver wheels if interested.

I thought that this K75S wheel was brand new in the box. When I opened the box, I saw that the rim had wheel weights on it. It otherwise looks brand new. Does the factory pre-balance the rims when new?

I think rims are always balanced with a tire on them so no I do not think the factory pre-balances rims

These wheels are a castings. All castings have very poor bending properties due to the somewhat random structure of the material. I would imagine the repair would require some welding and testing to check for stress cracks etc. If there is a specialty house with a good rep that does this that is cool. I know BMW is very conservative when it comes to safety and product liability issues.

Woody's Wheel Works in Denver, Colorado repairs cast wheels. I sent a R1200gs cast wheel to them a couple of years ago, came back perfect, not only was it true but they rrefinished the wheel as well.  It was cheaper then a new wheel, more expensive then a used one, but I knew what I had.

Wow! Didn't expect so many responses. Also forgot I had posted this.

It seems as though buying a new (used) wheel is the way to go. Thanks for all the advice!!!!
