Bep 3.0 with acewell
« on: May 01, 2018, 07:08:43 AM »
Hi there,

I have bought a bep3.0 and an acewell md085.

Connecting the bep to the bikes 24 point cable will start the bike but not give a display on the acewell unit. (Idiot lights are working)

I am not confident with electronics (among many other things) but have followed the wiring diagrams exactly as they are layed out except for connecting the tacho and speedo. Additionally i am left with 2 LED inverter cables which came with the acewell unit and am assuming they are the missing pieces but there is no information on where to attach them in the wiring diagram.

Any help is appreciated for getting the display.

Best regards,
Dale

Okay I'm sure I checked this before buying but now I'm reading that this md085 is DC 8-18 Volts power input.
Have I just screwed myself over massively or can I still use this acewell model...

Don't worry, this gauge is compatible with the motorcycle.  The input voltage you read in the manual is the range at which this gauge will function.

You have to ensure you have hooked up power correctly.
- constant 12V from BEP's "BAT" output to the Acewell's Connector "B" Brown wire
- switched 12V from BEP's "SWP" output to the Acewell's Connector "B" Red wire
- Ground connection from BEP's "GND" output to the Acewell's Connector "B" Black wire

This will set the stage for the meter to work.  With these three connections made, do you get a response from the meter?

If you've already got to this point, what specifically are the symptoms of your problem and what are your expectations?

Thanks again Robert,

I dont have a wire in the ground point of the bep.

My ground cable is in a cluster of 4 wires. Should I be adding a wire on to that cluster and connect the other end to the BEP?

Sorry to ask instead of just doing it... I dont have wire st home or know the gauge appropriate.

My goal is to have the led screen light up.

Best regards
Dale

Hi Dale,

Yes, you will need a ground connection to the gauge of some sort.

TheBEP is getting its ground through the OEM connector.  Consequently, you don't need to ground the BEP because it is already taken care of.  The Gauge needs to be referenced to ground as well. So you need to either connect the Black wire to ground through the multi-connected wire you show in your photo or via a wire to the GND point on the WEGA connector on the BEP.  Either will work.  It's up to you.

Until you connect the ground, there will be no current flow through the gauge and therefore the gauge will not work.

I have tried to ground it on all bare metal surfaces available to be reached by the cable and am still not receiving a display from the LCD screen.

Is there a particular point which you would reccomend?

Any frame point should do.  I'd check for power on the BAT and SWP points to make sure no fuses are blown.  Otherwise, as a last resort before assuming a problem with the gauge is to test it on the bench away from the bike.  Just connect it to a battery (Red and Brown to +ve and Black to -ve).

Ok I will try that in the morning.

Just to note, the original gauge was working fine and the idiot lights do work as well. The bike also starts.

Since you are posting in a BEP threat, should we assume you have the Acewell as well as the BEP?  If so, then yes the OEM speed sensor should work with the Acewell.  If not, then no it won't work with the Acewell without some electronics to transform the signal.

thanks for this! everything seems working ! I didn't route the fuel since I've read that the fuel level sensor is designed to provide a reversed resistance to indicate fuel level

I've read somewhere that I would need a charging light as a load from the Alternator connected so I'll have low RPM charging.

Do I need this even with the  BEP?
where is the Charging light connected?
what is the spec of the light ?

No, you don't need a charging light.  The BEP has an internal resistor that substitutes for a lamp.
The charging light connects between a source of switched power (i.e. a Green/Black wire somewhere on the bike that comes on with the ignition switch) and the Blue wire that goes to the Alternator.
The lamp is usually an incandescent, 3-6W is good enough.

Charge light in the cluster is a 12V 3W bulb.

Connects to Green/Black and Blue cluster wires.

Greetings from Finland! Old topic but I try to get some help with this topic:

I'm building my K100 "scrambler" and I have Acewell MA85 with BEP 3.0. I have a some problem as first writer in this topic. So I can't  get power to Acewell even my BEP connections should be OK. Original "brotbox" works OK with every lights on it.

When I put ignition on there is no power in Acewell MA85 and I can see only weak oil light and weak engine light. Hi beam light and indicator light works when in use but nothing in LCD or other lights.

I tried Acewell with straight battery power and it works so it is OK. I think there is some problem with power from BEP to Acewell. I read these earlier replies but I'm still sure should there be only one ground connection (now black 4-wire cable cut to one cable and connected to BEP "gnd" ) so there is no connection to frame at all with this metal connector with 4-wire black. Acewell temp sensor is connected to water pump drain hole at the moment.

In these topic there are no later messages is problem solved or not? But as I wrote my problem is similar. I was thinking is my BEP3.0 broken? If I measure BEP outputs should it be 12V or how should I test if there is some problem with BEP itself??

I'm waiting for Your reply..

Dear necromancer or warlock, either will work bringing the dead back to us.
Does de MA85 have the same wiring diagram as the MD85.
My acewell needs a 12v switched and or a 12v constant which needs to be wired as such.
Meaning one goes to an output thats activated after ignition -12v switched (motogadget tho, but does t change the functionality)
And the 12 v constant is to the power source of the unit.

See post #2 in this thread for the correct power connections. Power for the MD-85 are the same for the MA-85.  Use a multimeter to make sure you are getting +12V on BEP's BAT output all the time whether or not the bike ignition is on or off. Again make sure you get +12V on BEP's SWP output when you turn on the ignition.  Make sure the ground connection on the B connector (Black wire) is continuous to the bike's frame or the battery negative terminal.  Perform these measurements at the Acewell's "B" connector to be sure wiring is intact.  The 'B' connector is the 9-pin square one.

Here is the MA-85 wiring diagram:   https://acewell.co.uk/manuals/ACE-MA85-556-Wiring.pdf
