GPI, Neutral, and Clock not working
« on: February 23, 2018, 11:06:44 AM »
Just got a 1988 K75C and the GPI and neutral light do not function.  Checked the switch when re-lubing the splines and it is OK.  Did the wiring test to the dash and nothing lit up, indicating that I need a new circuit board.  BUT...  The clock also does not work.  Did not see in any posts if the clock is somehow connected to the circuit board.  So hoping for some advise:

1) Is the clock malfunction related to the non-functioning GPI and neutral light?
2) Saw two circuit boards available on eBay, part number 62111459239 and 62111459549.  Which one for my '88 K75C?

Bike starts fine and runs well.  Have not noticed if low fuel light functions or not yet, but all other lights/gauges on the dash work except the clock, neutral and Gear Position.

Thanks for any advise...

1) Are you shure that your model have a clock as standard? Don't know the 75's that good, but on the
    100's w/o a fairing a clock was extra.
2) The part numbers is for the low fuel warning lamp PCB, and you should have the that ends on 549.
    The GPI PCB have part number 62 11 1 459 238.

On the GPI PCB carefully check the solderpoints for cracks, the female connectors for corrosion....
also the male counterparts where they are connected to the conductive film.

Thanks.

Not sure if the clock is standard or not as I just got the bike.  I'll use the part numbers that you mentioned and check for corrosion, solder, etc on my board before I get a replacement.  Hope it works!

the clock came with all K's, but over time the lcd's tended to fade away so it's demise may or may not have anything to do with your other issues

the clock came with all K's,

Have checked the press release from -88, K75S, K100RS, K100RT and K100LT did have a clock as standard.
On the other models (K75, K75C and K100) the clock was extra....this is the Euro models....
US models might differ.

Checked the switch when re-lubing the splines and it is OK.
When you did your checks, what did you actually test?  Did you just do a visual check of the condition of the GPI switch?  Or did you do an electrical check of the switch to make sure the various pins were being grounded?

Did the wiring test to the dash and nothing lit up, indicating that I need a new circuit board.
What "wiring test" did you do?  What are you expecting to light up, the neutral lamp?  Did your wiring test include simulating the various binary numbers on Pins 2, 3 & 4 to see if the gear indicator functioned?  What is displayed in the LCD window for the gear indicator at the moment?

BUT...  The clock also does not work.  Did not see in any posts if the clock is somehow connected to the circuit board.  So hoping for some advise:
I won't comment on whether you have a clock or not; I would trust Inge's information above.  The clock is really simple.  It has only two inputs - power and ground.  It's fed from power applied to Pin 1 (Red/White) and grounds through Pin 18 (Brown).  It connects through the flexible PC cable inside the instrument cluster, so some things to check are (1) power on Pin 1 all the time, (2) secure ground to Pin 18 (3) good contact with the flexible PC cable inside the cluster.

This is what Robert have in mind (photo).....clock ground is connected to both pin 13 and 18.

WOW!  Thanks for all the good info.  The checks that I did were only on the GPI connector on frame - short various wires and look for gear indicator or neutral light to show - nothing on dash lit up.  The actual GPI was replaced when I did the spline lube.  Haven't yet disassembled the dash to do the checks and tests you propose.  Will do.  Thanks for all the good leads.  When I struggle through all of this, I'll report back my findings.

I hope you were actually shorting pins on the harness side of the connector and not the switch side of the connector.

It's unlikely that the GPI board is defective.  I've seen and heard of the LCD display going dark because that is a normal failure mode for LCDs.

In any case, there should always be some number between 1 and 5 indicating on the dash when power is applied and the TGPI switch is connected to the harness.  If the display is blank, then that could mean the switch is open circuit in all positions either because the common Brown wire is disconnected or the pin for the Brown wire is not making with its counterpart in the harness side.  In other words, all three inputs to the GPI on the dash are high, indicating a "7".  But you said you changed the switch on the transmission for a new one so that can't be the cause.

The correct test is to disconnect the TGPI switch from the harness connector, apply power and use a short jumper wire to bridge any of the Yellow wires to the Brown wire on the harness side.  Depending on which one you short, the dash will indicate either a "3" or a "5" or possibly a blank display.  If you get nothing but a blank display no matter how you jumper Yellow wires to Brown, then there is a connection problem with  the 24 pin connector at the instrument cluster.

I've never seen a K-bike instrument cluster without a clock but that's just my experience.  If you have a clock module, it will be located just below the BMU indicator.  It either works or doesn't work.  If it's present but not working, power is not being supplied to it.  Check the condition of the two power pins indicated by Inge above.  You may have to supply power and ground to the pins from an external source if you remove the instrument cluster from the motorcycle and try to bench test it.

If it has the LCD display I believe it has a clock. Why would BMW place a non functioning LCD board in the cluster when a plastic blank would be cheaper. They could then charge you more to retrofit a clock.

On the models that was delivered w/o a clock from factory a silver coloured cover looking like
a LCD display was mounted instead.
But I would guess that a retrofit clock was among the first box that was ticked of under extras
when this models was ordered at the stores.

Models delivered w/o a clock from factory was the same models in both EURO and US market.

I've never seen an Ozinian one without a clock. But in the future I'll look more closely.
