K1100RS Wheel Bearings
« on: February 17, 2018, 10:36:38 AM »
Just picked up a 95 K1100RS this week with 74K on the odo.  Starting to go through it for roadworthiness.  Removed and repacked steering stem bearings.  Old hard grease and now clean and repacked.  Maybe it will go in a straight line without hunting now.

Anyway while have the front wheel off might as well change the wheel bearings with that mileage.  Had completely forgot about the bastard size wheel bearing that BMW thinks is worth ownership of a first born child.

Question:  Why can't you use a 6005 on both sides of the wheel?  Assuming they were the same od which they aren't.

I've already ordered the proper bearings for replacement but it hit me that all of the Jap bikes I've owned use the same bearing on both sides of the wheel.  What makes BMW so special that a double wide bearing must be used on one side versus the other?  I just don't see where the loads on the wheel can differ from one side to the other.  Shaft jacking?  Crown of the road?  Crown Royal?

Called all our local bearing houses on the 3205 and you would think I was talking about something for the Jupiter probe.  Thank goodness for the internet.  I can't imagine needing one on the road in a hurry, hence I am replacing now.

Just random thought from an old fart who just had to go down the Beemer route one more time.  I have about 250,000 miles on my previous K100RS's and thought I should have another in the shop.  You probably have to question old guy buying a 23 year old bike.  I like to tinker and there is plenty to tinker with on BMW's.

Not at all. It makes sense to own a bike that will outlast you. That's especially appealing to your heirs, too. :giggles

Welcome, mophead. How about posting some photos?

If I can get the pics resized I'll post later.  Must admit though that the current main ride is a 2014 FJR1300.  Love that cruise control and electronic suspension.  Soft down the slab and hard when you get to the twisties.  Had on 08 FJR that I put 53K on and never a minutes trouble.  Just gas, oil, and tires.  Saw this 2014 for sale with 2700 miles on it for half the price of new and could not pass it up.

I know this is heresy on this forum but did want another brick just in case company comes by and needs something to ride.

Both bikes red by the way.  Mamma likes red so permission slip is easier when they are red.

Found a pic that would fit.  Its a survivor.  Pretty clean for its age.  Nicks and dings here and there but a nice bike, spotless tank on the inside, BMW tank bag, WP shock and front end, two spare throttle cables, spare clutch cable, and receipts and service records since new.  With what was spent on this thing at Sandia BMW in Albuquerque they may have to close now that the bike is no longer in New Mexico.
Recent new fuel pump and all new rubber fuel lines and filter.  New rear master cylinder, new pads front and rear, brake fluid flush and ABS flushed and reset.  Gonna need new tires soon but that is the easy part.  Pretty lucky to find this bike.  Been looking for about three years.  It popped up on ABQ craigslist on a Sunday and I brought it home on Tuesday.

You can resize with Paint or Paint 3D, easy and quick. Import your picture into Paint then resize by clicking on Canvas icon which is depicted as a box with extended corner lines. Reduce from 100% to 50%.

Welcome!  That's a nice bike.

I don't bother with resizing.  When I take photos to post here I just make sure what I want is in about 1/3 of the frame.  Then when I load them into my laptop I crop them for what I will be posting.  Takes a couple seconds and three clicks for each photo.  Haven't seen a resizing app that's as easy.

Welcome, nice looking bike.
If it's spent its life in a dry part of the world this may not be an issue, but my advice to possibly avoid a heart-stopping moment is to check the aluminium front brake hose splitter under the front mudguard. Mine suddenly failed due to corrosion on the banjo sealing faces - thankfully on my driveway.

Its been in a dry climate.  Two owners just outside of Denver, then Albuquerque for the last 12 years.  Now Amarillo.  Doesn't get much drier than that.
Funny thing, the last owner had the clear film applied to the tank so the tank bag would not scratch the tank.  It had some ragged corners so thought I would remove the film.  Got the hair dryer out and warmed it up for easier removal.
After removal of the film there were spider web looking lines on most of the tank.  Apparently the film adhesive made these marks and they were into the paint.  After about eight hours of meguires polish and several buffing pads I finally got the spider webs out of the paint but it was a pain in the butt getting them out.
When I think of all the cars getting this film installed from day one makes me wonder if someone is in for heartache down the when they remove it.
Any one else run into this before?
