Replacement RS front indicator lens
« on: January 31, 2018, 02:44:02 PM »
As I mentioned in a different thread I found a place here in Costa Rica that said they could make a new lens for me since my front LHS one was broken into 14 pieces and glued together.

I was somewhat dubious but I have to say the results are quite impressive.

It took them about a week to make and cost 10,000 colones - which is about $18 USD

:2thumbup: :2thumbup: Great result and price you now need to set up a distribution network. K75s font indicators could be your next project.

I am more than happy to order lenses for anyone that needs one - call it $25 US to cover my gas to and from the place etc (it is about an hour away through town) then shipping on top - which is pretty cheap here in CR just not very fast.

K75 lenses might prove more of a challenge because they asked for the whole housing to help fit the lens right etc.  As far as I know the K75S one is part of the main fairing and I do not own aK75S - although I would love to!

FC I can probably remove one of mine on the weekend and take some pictures. The OEM one is in two pieces the lens and the backing which holds the globe is glued or molded together. If you are willing to show them the pictures and get their thoughts on it would be helpful. I have found a source for the resin and the silicone for the mold in OZ. Next part is to find some damaged lenses that I can separate and are still able to have a mold taken from them. You might have really got onto something and at a very reasonable price. Keep up the good work.

One thing I would mention is that the new lens is not a perfect match for the colour of the old one. Pretty good but not identical, the hatching is slightly different as well.  If that kind of thing bothers you get a pair of lenses so they match.  I would do the second at cost ($18) since it is the same number of trips and amount of driving involved etc for one lens or two.

FC I am presuming (hoping) that the mold is reusable. So once the initial mold is done the process would be even quicker.

What media are they using to cast the lenses?  It would be good to know to see how close it would be to DOT standards.

I don't know what it is made of but this being Costa Rica I can say with some confidence that whether or not it is DOT standard is not going to keep the guys making them awake at night.  It is not an ideal solution I know but better than nothing.

Poserbricker/Film camera I was wondering, did you buy your K bike in Costa Rica or import from abroad? I’m probably moving to Panama in a few years and wondered if these can be found for sale in Central America? I know Costs Rica is another country but not that far away!

I was thinking the very same thing.  I'd sure like to have a left and right for my 75S, and think a lot of other people would, too.

JohhnyB I brought the bike here but it was imported from the US by the previous owner.  As far as I know it is one of three bricks on Costa Rica.

Panama has a slightly better selection of used bikes but you are better off bringing the bike from the US in my opinion. Shipping is not expensive - less than $500 - and Panama doers not have the crazy import taxes that CR does.

Hi, Thanks. Shipping from the Uk is a different price tier, but I worked out that I can split the bike into pieces and ship on 2 pallets for around £550. I don’t reckon I’d find a K1100 in Panama seeing as they are fairly rare even in the UK.
