Refurbish and paint job for '93 K1100LT rear hard bags
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:39:07 PM »
I picked up a set of '93 K1100LT rear hard bags with Z racks included for my '85 K100RS.. I've found allot of answers so far on this forum regarding how to refurbish this set of rear bags, (i.e., re-key the tumblers for the locks). As an interim I am thinking of cleaning the bags and painting the covers on these bags. (Eventually, I would like to do the Line-X, or PPG with clear coat - but money is being put other uses at the moment). Is there a post out there that discusses a strong, successful method of cleaning up, painting a Gen 3 bag, (maybe spray can paint?), so that the bags are presentable when one mounts them on the bike?  Are these Gen 3 bags enamel or lacquer paint from the factory? What kind of plastic are these bags made of,... ABS?

I have both rattle-canned (spray painted) a set flat black and done the Line-X thing to Gen 3  Integral Cases.  I learned a lot along the way.  I'll have some free time next week and post up some pointers in The Lieberry.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

The covers are ABS ( easily repairable) and the backs are PP (repairable but difficult).   The paint is Acrylic.   Painting the bare ABS requires special prep and good primer (like used on auto bumpers).

The ABS is easy to fix with plumbers cement for ABS Pipes. Add in some extra pieces of scrap ABS from TAP plastics, and you are set. I did this to mine. Will get around to filing down the pieces later.

May consider truck bed liner.
