'93 K1100RS, need to get it back on the road: PAINT
« on: December 26, 2017, 10:17:58 AM »
Long time no posting here, but hope someone can help with a color question. I have a '93 that had a broken upper fairing, (dropped it in the garage onto something else). Anyhow, got a NOS fairing in a silver color, and need to repaint it. I found a color number on a label under the seat, which later on I determined to be only part of the "combination" paint spec. Anyhow, the ColorRite, com site helps with sorting, and I think this color is the Classic Black. It is a black, but also has a shadow of dark green in it to my eyes, and is a metalic paint. Does this sound right to you folks?  I also was hoping to get a comment on the ColorRite package options. Has anyone here used them?  Screenshot below,........  (I hope)

You'd be better off going to an automotive paint shop to consult with them.  They can either look up the formulation based on the colour number for the paint scheme you have, or they can scan existing panels to program their paint mixing system to recreate the colour.  In either case, you'll end up with a better match than trying to purchase a pre-mix online.  In the end, it will be much cheaper for you than you think now.

Whatever you end up doing, buy a can of two-part clear coat (and a respirator mask). It is more expensive, but OEM quality.

+1 on the local automotive paint supply shop.  Try to find one that supplies the collision repair trade and maybe the custon builders.  They will have color analysis machinery that is many times better than your eyes.  All the good shops have them now.

Unless you are painting all the time and have a pretty good gun, it might be wise to ask about a shop that can do a good clear coat for a reasonable price.  Almost anyone can shoot base, but the clear is where the final finish is, and unless you do it everyday the few bucks that it will cost to have it done is money well spent.

I have found that the guy I take my parts to does it for less than I can buy the clear for.  I get the good price because I let him do my parts with a bigger job.  He does them with the clear left in the gun after the regular job.  It's always enough to do a small bike part.  It takes a week or two to get my parts back but the quality is excellent as is the price.

Why don't you paint it all. Pick your own colour and freshen up the whole bike. :bmwsmile

If you check the scheme code you know against the table here http://bmbikes.co.uk/paintcodes/blacks.htm then it should link to the particular black used in that scheme.  If I remember correctly, BMW at that time used Glasurit colours.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I do a bit of small job painting on old BSA and Triumphs so fairly confident in my ability. The issue in this area is all the auto paint suppliers are required to sell only the water based low VOC materials. Hobby guys are allowed to avoid that at a home shop, but just getting the paint is difficult. I thought maybe ColorRite would be the trick. Box in the mail to the doorstep. I was hoping someone here had used them previous, maybe I'll try calling them.

I haven't bought from Colorite, but if you want solvent based paint with a good match you can try these guys.  Their website is a bitch to navigate, but the stuff I have bought from them has always been a perfect match.  The only reason I buy local now instead of from them is that hazardous shipping is rather expensive.
