throttle not snapping back
« on: October 14, 2017, 10:36:06 PM »
1991 K75
my throttle does not snap back when i release it.
it gets there eventually but thought i would investigate so i followed this procedure
http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=1797.msg8850#msg8850

and it was pretty clean in there with but i wiped it out and applied a spray of silicon and reassembled
with no noticeable change so am guessing that the actual cable may be be a little kinked or just isn't running as freely as it was 26 years ago when it was made (assuming its the original cable.

rubber throttle grip isn't impeding its return either.

anyway i did notice that where the throttle cable sleeve meets the combination switch (see attached pics) i can  I am able to pull this sleeve back.
i am assuming this is how it should be.     Is it?

On the K11 the cable length adjustment is under that movable cover. That cover should just slide down the cable.........Maybe.......Put a touch o lube where the cover meets the cable so it doesnt tear. (spit) Slide it down gently, and you should have a threaded cable and nut arrangement?  I could be wrong, so don't force it. But that adjustment won't have an effect on the throttle snapping back.  That is just for the throttle lash. (play in the cable)

cheers Bizz
thats fixed that slop where the cable meets the housing.
the lock nut on that adjustment was loose as , so i adjusted it and nipped it up. perfect. a little smear of Vaseline applied to the rubber dust boot.

throttle still not snapping back, but hey, not really much of a problem. next time i have the tank off i will follow the throttle cable and see if i can spot any issues

Throttle cable runs under the tank.

Also, "They all do that."

Also, never lubricate a BMW cable. Except for grease on the clutch cable barrel ends.

I did not say "lube the cable".  Thought is was clear enough, just a touch where the cover meets the outside of the cable in case it's "frozen" and not willing to move. Better a "touch" of lube" easily wiped off, than a torn cover if it is stubborn,  and won't slide?

I had the same problem.

Turned out that the throttle grip had slid up on the handlebars and was rubbing on the end of the bar.  Loosened up the clamp that holds the throttle on the bar and slid it out about 3-4mm(1/8") and throttle snaps back smartly now.  Job took all of 5 minutes.

Bill against advice I've always lubed all my cables. All my cables are now 25 years old never been replaced, still fine. I think the problem is using the wrong lubricant, WD 40 and there like will cause the Teflon liner to degrade. I use a PTFE based lubricant called TriFlo which is available from bicycle shops and is used for cable lubricant. I have also fitted a grease nipple to my clutch arm and lube and flush my cables at least once a year.

I did not say "lube the cable".

I realize that, I just threw that in for blackie's sake.

And as Martin points out, Your Milage May Vary.
